McDavid, Draisaitl combine for 10 points in rout of Predators

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl put on a show during the Edmonton Oilers' 8-3 win over the Nashville Predators on Monday.

McDavid (one goal, four assists) and Draisaitl (four goals, one assist) combined for 10 points in the contest, and at least one of the stars was involved in each of Edmonton's eight markers on the night.

The two teams entered the third period tied 3-3, but the Oilers exploded for five goals in five minutes and 17 seconds, capped by Draisaitl's fourth goal and McDavid's fifth point.

McDavid began the third-period rally with a long-range wrister after circling the zone.

Draisaitl potted his second of the game less than a minute later.

Shortly after Zack Kassian's tally, Draisaitl completed his hat trick.

Draisaitl then took a feed in the slot from McDavid on the power play and made no mistake, completing the thumping.

Draisaitl (107 points) and McDavid (94) now sit first and second in league scoring.

Blue Jackets’ Anderson to miss 4-6 months after shoulder surgery

The 2019-20 campaign will be one to forget for Josh Anderson.

The Columbus Blue Jackets forward will miss four-to-six months after undergoing shoulder surgery Monday, the team announced.

Anderson hasn't played since Dec. 14 and was only expected to miss four-to-six weeks. In total, he skated in just 26 contests this season, recording a goal and three assists.

"When Josh suffered the injury, the options were to have it surgically repaired and miss the rest of the season or rest and rehabilitate with a chance to return to the lineup," general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said. "Unfortunately, the injury has not responded as any of us had hoped to the latter and the decision was made to have the surgery now so that Josh will be fully healthy and ready to go next season."

The 25-year-old power forward set career highs in 2018-19 with 27 goals and 20 assists in 82 games. He's set to become a restricted free agent this summer.

Leafs’ Rielly, Ceci on track to return next week

Reinforcements are on the way.

Toronto Maple Leafs defensemen Morgan Rielly and Cody Ceci are on track to return at some point next week, head coach Sheldon Keefe told Sportsnet's Chris Johnston.

The Maple Leafs also believe rookie forward Ilya Mikheyev will return this season, though his timeline is a bit longer than those of Rielly and Ceci, Johnston added.

Injuries have decimated Toronto's blue line in 2019-20. With Jake Muzzin also sidelined, the Leafs are currently playing without half of their regular top six defensemen.

Rielly, who finished fifth in Norris Trophy voting after last season, totaled 27 points in 46 games before going down with a fractured foot. He was given a timeline of at least two months on Jan. 13. The 25-year-old admitted he had been playing through an undisclosed ailment before suffering the foot injury.

Ceci hasn't played since sustaining an ankle injury on Feb. 5 against the New York Rangers. He's recorded eight points across 54 games in his first season in Toronto.

Fantasy: 5 moves you need to make in Week 21

Every Monday, theScore offers a weekly fantasy hockey column detailing a handful of moves you should make. This edition focuses on Week 21. Ownership percentages and position eligibility are courtesy of Yahoo.

Prepare for the playoffs

In most fantasy leagues, the playoffs begin March 9, but some may be starting their postseasons this week. Check to make sure you know your league's schedule.

Your strategy over the next week or so will depend on your place in the standings. If you've clinched a playoff spot and are locked into your position, you can start stashing players for the postseason. If you're fighting for your playoff life, you'll have to use up your adds to go all-out this week in order to get a ticket to the dance.

Regardless of your spot, it's crucial to look at the schedule ahead and use it to maximize your lineup. The following players should be able to help all fantasy owners, regardless of your current situation.

Add Tyler Ennis

Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / Getty

Team: Oilers
Position: LW/RW
Ownership: 22%

Ennis could not have ended up in a better spot. The Edmonton native went from one of the worst teams in the league in the Ottawa Senators to a spot on Connor McDavid's right wing with his hometown team. Ennis has been held off the scoresheet since his two-point Oilers debut, but he's worth picking up considering Edmonton plays four games this week and next week. The 30-year-old has enough skill and hockey IQ to keep up with McDavid.

Add Juuse Saros

Team: Predators
Position: G
Ownership: 32%

Goaltenders receiving Saros' workload are tough to come by at this time of year, but the Predators' de facto starter is still owned in less than one-third of leagues. The 24-year-old has grabbed a stranglehold on Nashville's No. 1 job, starting 10 of the team's last 13 games while going 7-3-0 with a .930 save percentage in that span.

The Preds have games in hand on most of their Western Conference competitors, so Saros is a valuable fantasy commodity for the rest of the season. Nashville plays four games both this week and next.

Add Sonny Milano

Harry How / Getty Images Sport / Getty

Team: Ducks
Position: LW
Ownership: 2%

A change of scenery has done wonders for Milano. The 2014 first-round pick was never able to fully establish himself with the Columbus Blue Jackets, but he's getting the opportunity of a lifetime with the Ducks, as he's skating on the club's first line with Ryan Getzlaf and Rickard Rakell. The 23-year-old has already registered three points in three games with his new club, and Anaheim plays eight contests over the next 14 days.

Add Kevin Labanc

Team: Sharks
Position: LW/RW
Ownership: 18%

Unless he gets on a roll, Labanc is best served as a streaming option for this week. The Sharks play four games this week, but only three next week.

Labanc has failed to replicate his 56-point breakout season from a year ago, as he currently stands with 32 points in 65 games. However, poor shooting luck (8.5%) has played a part. Regardless, Labanc gets top-six minutes and time on the first power-play unit, which is difficult to find at this stage in the season for a player with less than 20% ownership. He's worth a flyer.

Report: Devils interviewed Mike Gillis for GM job

The New Jersey Devils interviewed former General Manager of the Year Mike Gillis for their GM position, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday's Headlines segment on "Hockey Night in Canada."

The Devils fired GM Ray Shero in January. Assistant GM Tom Fitzgerald was promoted to interim GM following Shero's dismissal.

Fitzgerald remains a "very serious candidate" for the position, Friedman added, but the organization is still going to continue with its search.

Gillis was the GM of the Vancouver Canucks for six seasons from 2008-09 to 2013-14. He was named GM of the year for the 2010-11 season, in which the Canucks won the Presidents' Trophy and lost in the Stanley Cup Final. He hasn't held a job with an NHL front office since but admitted last summer he was looking to get back into the game.

The Devils' GM search will continue once the season is over and they can interview candidates currently employed by NHL teams, Friedman added. Waiting was not necessary with Gillis since he's currently an executive free agent.

Norris Trophy Power Rankings: Can’t catch Carlson

In the fifth edition of theScore's Norris Trophy Power Rankings, a new defenseman enters the mix.

5. Shea Theodore

GP G A P ATOI xGF%
65 10 33 43 22:09 56.56

Theodore cracks this list for the first time. The 24-year-old is enjoying a breakout season in his third campaign with the Golden Knights. He's logging the most ice time of his career and has already set a new personal best in points. Unfortunately, as great of a year as he's producing, Theodore's chances of moving into the top four here by season's end are slim.

4. Alex Piertrangelo

GP G A P ATOI xGF%
63 13 35 48 24:07 53.32

Pietrangelo is peaking at the right time. Fresh off a Stanley Cup run with the Blues last spring - in which nobody would've balked if he took home the Conn Smythe Trophy - the 30-year-old is continuing his career year offensively, just as he's set to enter unrestricted free agency.

3. Victor Hedman

Mike Ehrmann / Getty Images Sport / Getty
GP G A P ATOI xGF%
61 9 43 52 24:15 56.81

If you could create an NHL defenseman in a lab, he would look similar to Hedman. Standing 6-foot-6 and able to fly up and down the ice with ease, the Swede is as close to perfect as they come. He's put together another strong campaign, and Hedman is in line for his fourth straight top-three Norris Trophy finish.

2. Roman Josi

Frederick Breedon / Getty Images Sport / Getty
GP G A P ATOI xGF%
62 14 43 57 25:52 54.36

Josi's sensational season is getting drastically overlooked because the Predators are playing poorly, and the man in front of him in these rankings is on the verge of being included in the record books. However, the Swiss blue-liner is on pace for 70-plus points, and only 10 defensemen since 1986 have accomplished that feat.

1. John Carlson

Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / Getty
GP G A P ATOI xGF%
63 15 57 72 24:40 50.46

Carlson has held the top spot in these rankings since the first edition this season. Is he flawed defensively? Sure, but a 94-point campaign (his current pace) would put him in a league of his own. To find the last D-man to record 94-plus single-season points, you have to go way back to 1992-93, when Phil Housley posted 97 points during an era when 7.26 goals per game were scored (the average now is just over six per contest).

Just missed the cut: Quinn Hughes, Cale Makar, Kris Letang, Ryan Suter

Merzlikins leaves game after Duclair runs him over

Columbus Blue Jackets phenom Elvis Merzlikins was forced to leave Monday's game against the Ottawa Senators after Anthony Duclair skated into him in the second period.

Joonas Korpisalo replaced Merzlikins between the pipes.

Merzlikins entered Monday's contest with a .922 save percentage and a 2.37 goals-against average in 31 games. The 25-year-old rookie became the sixth goalie in the last 90 years to record five shutouts across an eight-game span earlier in February.

Korpisalo has been stellar, too, posting a .913 save percentage and a 2.49 goals-against average in 32 games entering Monday.

Report: Hurricanes reached out to Blackhawks for goalie help

The Carolina Hurricanes contacted the Chicago Blackhawks about potentially acquiring a goaltender after their two netminders were injured Saturday night, sources told The Athletic's Mark Lazerus.

Both James Reimer and Petr Mrazek were forced to leave Saturday's contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs due to injuries. Carolina still managed to win the game with 42-year-old emergency goalie David Ayres between the pipes.

Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour said postgame that Reimer will be out for a while and Mrazek's status is unknown, according to Sportsnet's Luke Fox.

Chicago's two goalies, Corey Crawford ($6 million) and Robin Lehner ($5 million), are both pending unrestricted free agents.

Stat Lehner Crawford
Rec. 16-10-5 11-16-3
GAA 3.01 2.82
SV% .918 .915
GSAA 10.47 5.32

GSAA = Goals saved above average

The Blackhawks allow the most expected goals against per 60 minutes at five-on-five, according to Natural Stat Trick. The Hurricanes, meanwhile, allow the 15th most.

Crawford has won two Stanley Cups with Chicago and ranks third on the franchise's all-time wins list.

Lehner signed a one-year deal as a free agent this summer after he was named a Vezina Trophy finalist a season ago with the New York Islanders.

Report: Flames, Canucks, Golden Knights interested in Leafs’ Barrie

The Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, and Vegas Golden Knights are interested in Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tyson Barrie, according to Sportsnet's Chris Johnston.

"Calgary, Vancouver, Vegas ... they're all wondering what the status is of Tyson Barrie, because they're among the teams that are looking to potentially acquire him," Johnston said during Saturday's Headlines segment on "Hockey Night in Canada." "They've certainly, at least, had some exploratory talks with the Leafs, and will have to go elsewhere depending on whether he's still gonna be moved."

Barrie temporarily left Saturday's game in the first period against the Carolina Hurricanes after going headfirst into the boards, but he returned to start the second frame.

As Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman outlined, it's not guaranteed Barrie is moved.

"The Maple Leafs believe that Cody Ceci and Morgan Rielly will be back in March," Friedman said during the segment. "And if, if they're going to trade Tyson Barrie, they're not going to do it unless they know that they can have somebody that can tie them over until everybody is healthy, plus some futures, either for themselves or to use elsewhere."

Barrie is a pending unrestricted free agent and carries a $2.75-million cap hit. He has five goals and 30 assists in 63 games this season, his first in Toronto.

The British Columbia native was acquired during the offseason from the Colorado Avalanche along with Alexander Kerfoot and a sixth-round pick for Nazem Kadri, Calle Rosen, and a third-round pick.

The Leafs are in a battle with the Florida Panthers for third place in the Atlantic Division.

Sharks’ Kane benched in loss vs. Rangers

Evander Kane leads the San Jose Sharks with 21 goals, but that didn't stop interim head coach Bob Boughner from benching him for the entire third period during Saturday's 3-2 loss against the New York Rangers.

"I think there's a level, an expectation here, and a standard that we hold every player the same accountable to," Boughner said postgame, according to The Athletic's Kevin Kurz. "I just think that you have to be prepared and you have to be able to get out there and compete for your teammates. I didn't think he had any of that tonight. It doesn't matter who you are, we're going to make sure that we have that standard and that line for everybody."

Kane played 12:19 in the contest - the fourth-lowest total on the Sharks.

The 28-year-old signed a seven-year, $49-million contract in 2018.
