Report: DeAngelo generating a ‘ton of interest’ on trade market

Tony DeAngelo is drawing significant attention on the trade market, one day after the New York Rangers announced the defenseman has played his last game with the club.

"We know he's been told to go home and await a trade. There's a ton of interest all of the sudden in Tony DeAngelo," TSN's Darren Dreger reported Tuesday on "Insider Trading."

"I'm told, according to a source, that DeAngelo could be moved within the next few days," Dreger said.

DeAngelo was placed on waivers Sunday after he reportedly got into an altercation with teammate Alexandar Georgiev following an overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He cleared waivers, but Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton confirmed Monday that DeAngelo wouldn't suit up for New York again. Gorton said the organization and Pat Brisson, the player's agent, would work on executing a trade.

New York scratched DeAngelo prior to a pair of contests earlier in the season due to poor performance, and Gorton said the 25-year-old wasn't able to move on from that decision. The GM told him if his name comes up in anything, he'd be placed on waivers.

DeAngelo's social media presence - which has included saying COVID-19 is a hoax - wasn't a factor in his dismissal from the Rangers, though he was spoken to about it, team president John Davidson said Monday.

The blue-liner signed a two-year, $9.6-million extension with the Rangers after recording 53 points over 68 games last season. In 2021, he's notched one point over six matchups.

Chara’s sticks mistakenly sent to New Jersey man: ‘Why is this box so tall?’

Ariel Ben-Abraham, a 20-year-old New Jersey resident, received the unlikeliest of packages on his doorstep Monday: a box of Zdeno Chara's hockey sticks.

True Sports, the manufacturer of the towering defender's twigs, sent a package labeled for the Washington Capitals' practice facility, but it ended up in Ben-Abraham's possession.

"I'm thinking to myself, 'Why is this box so tall?'" Ben-Abraham told The Athletic. "I opened it, and there's a bunch of hockey sticks. And I'm like, 'What did I order?'"

Ben-Abraham took to Twitter to point out FedEx's mishap, and it quickly went viral with over 14,000 likes.

He said the box contained 17-20 of Chara's sticks - a model that isn't available to the public yet. True Sports top-priced sticks go for nearly $300 apiece.

"This has to take the cake as the strangest thing I've gotten by mistake," Ben-Abraham told ESPN. "Future Hall of Famer's sticks, for the tallest player in NHL history? That's crazy. Those odds don't even make sense."

True Sports reached out to Ben-Abraham to inform him of the mix-up's severity, but he was already planning to return the sticks to their rightful owner.

"He said he was going to report me. Report what? They dropped off the box and handed it to me. There's nothing really to report here, buddy," Ben-Abraham said. "I said, 'Brother, if I posted it to social media, I'm pretty sure you're going to get everything back."

Devils games postponed through Feb. 6 with 10 players on COVID list

The NHL is postponing all New Jersey Devils games through at least Feb. 6, the league announced Monday.

More to come.

Oilers, Sens combine for 8 goals in wild 1st period

Defense was optional during the first period of Sunday night's clash in Edmonton, as the Oilers and Ottawa Senators combined for eight goals in the opening 20 minutes.

The Oilers wasted no time finding the back of the net. Forward Dominik Kahun scorched Matt Murray eight seconds into the contest.

Kahun's lightning-quick tally tied Wayne Gretzky's franchise record for the fastest goal to open a game, according to Sportsnet Stats.

Edmonton added two more tallies by the 7:20 mark of the frame. James Neal tapped home his first of the season before defenseman Tyson Barrie buried a power-play bomb to register his first goal with his new club and chase Murray.

Neal added another before Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored to stretch Edmonton's lead to 5-1 through 13 minutes. It was the second-fastest five-goal outburst in Oilers history, missing the franchise record by four seconds. Superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl both registered three assists.

The Sens refused to go away quietly, though, as Brady Tkachuk and Drake Batherson scored to head into the intermission down 5-3.

Wild prospect Rossi back in Austria due to COVID-19 complications

Minnesota Wild prospect Marco Rossi has returned to his native Austria to rest due to COVID-19 complications, the team announced Saturday.

There is no timeline for his return.

Rossi was ruled out indefinitely with an upper-body injury earlier in January. The ailment stems from having COVID-19 in November, according to The Athletic's Michael Russo.

Minnesota drafted the 19-year-old ninth overall in 2020 after he posted 120 points in 56 games with the OHL's Ottawa 67's last season.

Rossi captained Austria at the 2021 world juniors in Edmonton, going pointless in four contests.

Bergevin denies report of Mete trade request, agent confirms rumor

Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin denied reports that defenseman Victor Mete has requested a trade despite the player's agent saying the opposite.

"Not true and not trading him," Bergevin wrote in a text message to TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

It was reported Saturday that Mete wants out of Montreal. His agent, Darren Ferris, said the request stems from a lack of playing time.

"There isn't opportunity to get in the lineup," Ferris said, according to LeBrun. "It's best for both the player and the team."

Mete has been a healthy scratch in each of the Canadiens' eight games this season, failing to crack a stout Montreal blue line after the additions of veteran Joel Edmundson and dynamic rookie Alexander Romanov.

The Habs' reconstructed defense corps has paid dividends to this point, as the club is 5-1-2 on the year.

Mete, 22, appeared in 51 games for Montreal last season, registering 11 points while averaging 16 minutes per night. He carries a $735,000 cap hit and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the campaign.

2 Golden Knights-Sharks games postponed due to COVID-19 protocol

Two upcoming games between the Vegas Golden Knights and San Jose Sharks, scheduled for Feb. 1 and Feb. 3, have been postponed, the league announced Friday.

Three Vegas coaches are currently isolating, and defenseman Alex Pietrangelo was placed on the NHL's COVID-19 protocol list Thursday.

Thursday's contest between the Golden Knights and St. Louis Blues was also postponed. No makeup dates have been announced for any of the delayed games.

Vegas announced Tuesday that the entire coaching staff is isolating out of an "abundance of caution." All team facilities remain closed until further notice.

Marchand: ‘I’m not going to poke the bear’ when playing Chara for 1st time

Notorious agitator Brad Marchand won't try to get under the skin of long-time friend and former teammate Zdeno Chara when the Boston Bruins clash with the Washington Capitals on Saturday.

"He's the kind of guy where when he's out there, you're an opponent. He's not going to have any friends out there. He's going to play the game and compete and battle," Marchand said, according to ESPN's Greg Wyshynski.

"I'm not going to poke the bear in any way. The biggest thing I can do is just skate away from him. If you get within that reach or his grasp, then you're not going anywhere."

Chara signed a one-year contract with Washington this offseason after 14 campaigns with the Bruins. The 43-year-old suited up for over 1,000 games with Boston, claiming a Norris Trophy in 2009 and the Stanley Cup in 2011.

The future Hall of Fame blue-liner downplayed the reunion with his former teammates, saying he knows what to expect when Marchand is on the forecheck.

"I don't think it's going to be any different," Chara said. "He's a guy who will always go out there and compete for his teams. I think we had many practices against each other and we both compete pretty hard. I don't expect anything else from him or anybody else."

The Capitals and Bruins enter Saturday's contest as the East Division's top two teams in the young 2021 season.

Jim Rutherford resigns as Penguins GM for personal reasons

Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford resigned from his position, citing personal reasons, the team announced Wednesday.

Assistant GM Patrik Allvin will take over responsibilities on an interim basis as the club begins its search for a new executive.

"It has been a great honor to serve as general manager of the Penguins, and to hang two more Stanley Cup banners at PPG Paints Arena," Rutherford said. "I have so many people to thank, beginning with the owners, Ron Burkle and Mario Lemieux, and team president David Morehouse. There always has been so much support from everyone involved with the Penguins, both on the hockey and business staffs, and, of course, from a special group of players led by Sidney Crosby.

"The fans here have been tremendous to me and my family. I know it's a little unusual to have this happen during a season, but just felt this was the right time to step away."

Rutherford took over as GM in 2014 and led Pittsburgh to back-to-back championships in 2016 and 2017. He made several major trades during his tenure, acquiring the likes of Phil Kessel, Patric Hornqvist, Jason Zucker, and Patrick Marleau, among others.

The 71-year-old also hired current head coach Mike Sullivan, who transformed an uninspired Penguins team falling well short of expectations into Cup champions immediately after his arrival.

Pittsburgh owns a 276-154-56 record since Rutherford's hiring. The club ranks fifth in wins, points, and point percentage over that span. The Penguins currently sit fourth in the East Division through seven games.

Before joining the Penguins, Rutherford spent 20 years as GM of the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes, winning the Stanley Cup in 2006.

Calder Trophy Power Rankings: Welcome to the Kaprizov show

In the first edition of theScore's 2021 Calder Trophy Power Rankings, we get an early look at how this season's freshmen are adapting to NHL life.

With such a small sample size - and little contributions from the 2020 draft class so far - this list is destined to change drastically.

5. Pius Suter, Blackhawks

GP P ATOI xGF%
6 4 15:04 45.25

Suter has made an impact early in his career with the Blackhawks. The 24-year-old undrafted center who spent the last five seasons in his native Switzerland is logging first-line minutes alongside future Hall of Famer Patrick Kane, and he bagged the first of his three goals this campaign during an impressive performance versus the Red Wings. Suter's analytic metrics are poor, and his monstrous shooting percentage (20%) is bound to regress, but Chicago has to be pleased with the early returns from an unheralded offseason signing.

4. Josh Norris, Senators

GP P ATOI xGF%
6 4 16:20 57.00

Norris' development has been a lengthy project for the Senators, but it's beginning to pay dividends. The 21-year-old didn't receive much attention after being included in the Erik Karlsson trade package from San Jose, and he's quickly established an important role in his first full season in Ottawa. Norris is centering the club's dangerous top line and getting first-unit power-play minutes. The forward is proving he's worthy, too, while ranking third in rookie scoring. Keep an eye on Norris, who could be a dark horse rookie of the year candidate.

3. Ty Smith, Devils

GP P ATOI xGF%
5 6 15:31 37.65

Smith has been a bright light on a surprising Devils squad. The 17th pick in the 2018 draft has frequently shown flashes of his brilliant offensive instincts, and he can become a legitimate star with some effort to improve and adapt to defending at the NHL level. If Smith puts his name on the scoresheet in his next contest, he'll become only the second blue-liner in NHL history to open their career with a six-game point streak.

2. Alexander Romanov, Canadiens

GP P ATOI xGF%
6 2 19:05 56.65

The Canadiens expected big things out of Romanov right away, and he's delivering for the red-hot Habs. Only 21, Romanov plays with poise and a hockey IQ well beyond his years. His versatile style features strong skating, quick puck movement, and physicality. He'll be in tough to win hardware this season without racking up points, but Romanov has been spectacular so far.

1. Kirill Kaprizov, Wild

GP P ATOI xGF%
6 6 18:42 47.93

Nearly six years after drafting him, Kaprizov has emerged as everything the Wild had hoped for and more. The former KHL dynamo is leading Minnesota - and all rookies - in scoring while providing a significant spark to a Wild attack that's long been starving for creativity and playmakers. Kaprizov's play during his first stretch of games indicates he may run away with the Calder Trophy after entering the season as a favorite.
