NHL looking into hot mic incident with referee in Predators-Red Wings

Warning: Story and video contain coarse language

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly says the league is looking into an incident involving a referee that occurred during Tuesday's matchup between the Nashville Predators and Detroit Red Wings, according to The Athletic's Adam Vingan.

One of the on-ice officials called a questionable tripping penalty against Nashville forward Viktor Arvidsson, the team's first infraction of the contest, in the second period. During the game's broadcast, the referee could be heard on a hot mic admitting to targeting the Predators for a penalty.

Referees Tim Peel and Kelly Sutherland were working the game, though it's unclear whose voice was on the microphone. In 2015, Peel said the NHL wants officials to sometimes make calls with "game management" in mind - in other words, to ensure a contest doesn't get out of hand.

The Predators went on to win 2-0.

Report: Predators seeking 3 assets for Ekholm

The Nashville Predators' asking price for defenseman Mattias Ekholm is steep ahead of this season's trade deadline.

"It is a three-asset ask to get in on the bidding for Mattias Ekholm," reported TSN's Pierre LeBrun on Tuesday's edition of "Insider Trading," citing sources. "Which is a first-round pick, an elite prospect, and a third asset, which can take on different forms."

The Boston Bruins and Winnipeg Jets have reportedly shown interest in acquiring Ekholm. The NHL's top available blue-liner has another year remaining on his current deal, which carries a $3.75-million cap hit.

Ekholm, 30, is a strong two-way defenseman. He's recorded five goals and nine assists in 25 games this season while averaging 22:46 of ice time per contest.

Watch: Flames make it tough to get game puck after Gustavsson’s 1st NHL win

Ottawa Senators rookie goaltender Filip Gustavsson earned his first NHL win Monday against the Calgary Flames. When teammate Brady Tkachuk went to retrieve the game puck for the netminder to commemorate the milestone, he ran into a bit of trouble with their opponents.

Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson seemingly tried to skate off the ice with the puck in hand before Tkachuk and a referee stopped him. When the pair called Andersson out, he tossed the puck onto the ice, and Calgary's agitator Matthew Tkachuk whipped it against the wall.

The Flames heavily outplayed the Senators but were stoned by Gustavsson, who turned aside 35 of the 36 shots that came his way. Calgary is in sixth place in the North Division with a 15-14-3 record, while Ottawa sits in seventh with a 10-20-3 record.

Sabres’ Hutton leaves game early with apparent leg injury

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Carter Hutton left Monday's game against New York after a collision with Rangers forward Julien Gauthier.

Hutton appeared to injure his leg on the play. He was in visible pain afterward and needed to be helped to the dressing room.

With Linus Ullmark still sidelined due to an ailment, goaltender Dustin Tokarski took over for Hutton. It's Tokarski's first NHL game since Oct. 28, 2016, according to NHL PR.

Interim head coach Don Granato says Ullmark, who's currently on the road with the Sabres, still isn't close to returning to game action.

"Linus has not practiced with us, so a big part of having him on the trip was to get that process started," Granato said Monday, according to The Athletic's John Vogl. "Then we'll have more information as we put him on the ice."

Granato added: "We're going to be taking in information, as is Linus, to work out any projection from that point. Hopefully, sooner than later."

Buffalo has lost 12 straight games since Ullmark was injured in late February.

Bruins’ next 2 games postponed after 4 players enter COVID-19 protocol

The NHL is postponing the Boston Bruins' next two games after four additional players from the club entered the COVID-19 protocol Friday, the league announced.

The Bruins' matchups against the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders on Saturday and Tuesday, respectively, have been postponed.

Boston canceled its morning skate Thursday after a player entered the protocol. However, the team played its game against the Sabres later that day after further contact tracing and testing.

Vancouver also announced Antoine Roussel will return to the lineup Friday against the Montreal Canadiens, while Jimmy Vesey will make his Canucks debut after the team claimed him off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier this week. Bruins, Sabres cancel morning skates due to COVID-19 protocols

The Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins both canceled their morning skates ahead of their Thursday night matchup due to COVID-19 protocols.

It's not currently known whether the teams' 7 p.m. contest will be affected as a result, according to The Athletic's John Vogl.

A Sabres training staff member entered the protocol early Thursday, according to Vogl. The team is currently contact tracing.

For the Bruins, one of their players entered the league's protocol, the team announced. Boston placed forward Jake DeBrusk on the COVID-19 list late last week but removed him Sunday after head coach Bruce Cassidy revealed it was due to a false positive, according to Boston Sports Journal's Conor Ryan.

The Sabres experienced a pause in play earlier this season due to an outbreak that affected several players and coaches.
