Panthers sign OHL goalie Mack Guzda

The Florida Panthers signed goaltender Mack Guzda to a three-year, entry-level contract, the team announced Monday.

Guzda, 21, is one of the OHL's top goaltenders this season. In 16 contests with the Barrie Colts, he recorded an 11-4-1 record alongside a .925 save percentage. He also had a 5-4-1 record with a .915 save percentage in 10 games with the Owen Sound Attack.

"Guzda has been a standout goaltender in the Ontario Hockey League this season," Panthers general manager Bill Zito said. "We are excited about his growth and are thrilled that he will continue his development in our organization."

Multiple NHL teams had reportedly expressed interest in signing the goaltender, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Florida already has a crowded crease at the NHL level with Sergei Bobrovsky and Spencer Knight. The club traded top goalie prospect Devon Levi to the Buffalo Sabres during the offseason in a deal to acquire Sam Reinhart.

Campbell focused on winning with Leafs as free agency looms

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jack Campbell will become a free agent this summer, but his focus this season is squarely on helping the team succeed.

"I love being a Toronto Maple Leaf,” Campbell said, according to the Toronto Star's Chris Johnston. “Leafs Nation has been unbelievable for me personally, and then supporting our team. The coaches, my teammates, it’s just incredible how spoiled we are, just the support we get from them.

"It’s a dream to play in Toronto and I’m just so motivated to try to help us win. To win in Toronto would just be a dream come true."

In his first season as a starting goalie, the 30-year-old has been one of the NHL's best netminders and just wrapped up his first All-Star appearance.

In 32 contests, he owns a 21-6-3 record alongside a .925 save percentage and 14.19 goals saved above average. Campbell is currently making $1.65 million and will be in line for a significant raise this offseason against the Leafs' minimal cap space.

The netminder said he tries not to think about the uncertainty surrounding his future.

"I mean, I’d love to say absolutely not, but of course we’re all human,” Campbell said.

"I just think to myself, ‘Just go out and compete for the guys.' That’s all it’s about, anyway. Obviously, we all have good days, bad days, but it’s all about just being in the right mindset for your teammates and just competing for them."

Metro takes down Central to win 2022 All-Star Game

The Metropolitan Division defeated the Central Division 5-3 to win Saturday's All-Star Game in Las Vegas.

Metro captain Claude Giroux finished the game with two goals and was also named MVP. Jack Hughes netted the game-winner.

Chris Kreider and Evgeny Kuznetsov were the other two goalscorers. Frederik Andersen let in two goals on nine shots while Tristan Jarry shut the door, allowing just one goal on 15 shots.

Joe Pavelski netted a goal and an assist for the Central side, with the other two goals coming from Nazem Kadri and Clayton Keller. Cam Talbot allowed four goals on 13 shots while Juuse Saros let in one on five shots.

This marks the third time the Metropolitan Division has won the All-Star Game since the NHL adopted the divisional format in 2016.

The winning team earned a $1-million prize to be divided among its members.

Kyrou, Hedman dazzle in NHL All-Star Skills Competition

The NHL's All-Stars hit the ice in Las Vegas on Friday night to showcase their skills. With two brand-new events that took place outside on the famous Vegas strip, there was no lack of excitement from start to finish.

Let's take a look at who won each competition and how everything went down.

Kyrou claims Fastest Skater 💨

All eyes were on Connor McDavid here, but Jordan Kyrou came out of nowhere to win this one. The St. Louis Blues forward clocked a speed of 13.55 seconds, slightly edging out Adrian Kempe's time of 13.585.

Dylan Larkin surprisingly came in second last after posting a time of 13.172 in 2016.

Player Time (seconds)
Jordan Kyrou 13.55
Adrian Kempe 13.585
Chris Kreider 13.664
Connor McDavid 13.69
Cale Makar 13.834
Kyle Connor 13.851
Dylan Larkin 14.116
Evgeny Kuznetsov 14.559

Campbell, Vasilevskiy win Save Streak 🚫

The Atlantic Division tandem of Jack Campbell and Andrei Vasilevskiy recorded a save streak of nine consecutive stops to win the competition.

However, Chris Kreider scored on Vasilevskiy by taking a page out of Nikita Kucherov's book, using Kucherov's signature move against the Russian's Tampa Bay Lightning teammate.

Werenski emerges victorious at the Bellagio 💸

The NHL took to the famous Bellagio Fountains for a new target practice event. Zach Werenski came out victorious, but Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson was the highlight of the event. She sat in first place until Roman Josi dethroned her, but she ultimately finished in third.

Hedman blasts hardest shot 💪

The field for this competition wasn't as dazzling as in years past, but Adam Pelech, Timo Meier, Tom Wilson, and Victor Hedman all cracked shots of at least 100 miles per hour. Hedman came out on top with a 103.2 mph shot. Pelech finished in second at 102.2, Wilson in third at 101.1, and Meier in fourth at 100.1.

Pietrangelo takes home Breakaway Challenge 🏆

This year's Breakaway Challenge was electric from start to finish. The players pulled out all the stops and gave the crowd a real treat.

Kirill Kaprizov started things off by paying homage to Alex Ovechkin.

Trevor Zegras - who was brought to Vegas specifically for this challenge - followed him up by scoring one of the most incredible goals you'll ever see. Dressed up as Peter LaFleur from "Dodgeball," Zegras walked in blindfolded and somehow scored an absurd spin-o-rama goal.

Jack Hughes was up next and performed a nifty little magic trick where he summoned a mini version of himself to score.

Alex DeBrincat took a page out of Zegras' book and paid homage to "The Hangover" movies, dressing up as Zach Galifianakis' character. He even brought out Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr to help him out.

Last but not least was hometown favorite Alex Pietrangelo. He may have had the most underwhelming shot, but he evidently had the judges in his pocket to secure the win, considering he didn't even score on his attempt.

Pavelski dominates at Blackjack 🃏

The second event that took place out on the Strip was the 21 in '22 challenge. Players were tasked with shooting pucks at a wall of cards in a modified version of Blackjack. Joe Pavelski dominated the competition. He rarely missed any of his shots and edged out Steven Stamkos to take home the trophy.

Aho wins Accuracy Contest 🎯

Sebastian Aho took out his opponents with ease in the final competition of the night. He knocked off all four targets in a quick 10.937 seconds. Jake Guentzel was a close second, taking 12.017 seconds to knock off all of his targets.

The players will return to the ice Saturday night for the All-Star Game.

Report: Blackhawks interviewing Chiarelli for hockey operations vacancy

The Chicago Blackhawks have contacted Peter Chiarelli and will interview him for their hockey operations vacancy, TSN's Darren Dreger reported on Thursday's edition of "Insider Trading."

Interim general manager Kyle Davidson is currently running the club, and the Blackhawks indicated earlier this week that he is a candidate for the position and will also receive an interview. The team elevated Davidson to the role following longtime GM Stan Bowman's resignation earlier this season in the wake of the Kyle Beach allegations.

Chicago formed an advisory panel that includes Marian Hossa, Eddie Olczyk, and Patrick Sharp to help in the search for a new GM.

The St. Louis Blues named Chiarelli vice president of hockey operations in September. He began as a front office executive in 1999 when the Ottawa Senators hired him as an assistant GM. Chiarelli later became GM of the Boston Bruins from 2006-15 and the Edmonton Oilers from 2015-19.

Subban confirms appearance in latest Jackass film

If you're heading to the movie theater to see the latest installment of the Jackass film series, you're also going to get a dose of NHL star P.K. Subban.

The New Jersey Devils defenseman confirmed on Twitter Thursday that he's participating in one of the segments for "Jackass Forever," the fourth movie in the film franchise hitting theaters on Feb. 3.

The cast tasked Subban with firing a slapshot at one of their members to test the true protectiveness of a jockstrap.

Subban has one of the hardest shots in the league - the 32-year-old clocked a slapshot at 98.7 miles per hour at the 2018 All-Star Game.

The Jackass film series involves cast members such as Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O participating in various outrageous stunts.

Vezina Power Rankings: Shesterkin separating from pack

In our fourth edition of the 2021-22 Vezina Trophy power rankings, we have a couple of newcomers as well as a new netminder on top.

5. John Gibson, Anaheim Ducks

Previous rank: N/A

RECORD GAA XGA/60 SV% HDSV% GSAA
15-10-8 2.49 2.97 .922 .859 13.81

The Ducks have been a pleasant surprise this season and Gibson is finally getting the chance to backstop an overall solid team. Anaheim has struggled mightily over the past few years, and while there have been improvements, Gibson has been making up for some of the defensive woes that have plagued the team. He ranks third in the league with 17.93 goals saved above expected, while the Ducks give up the seventh-most shots per game in the NHL (33.2).

4. Tristan Jarry, Pittsburgh Penguins

Previous rank: 3

RECORD GAA XGA/60 SV% HDSV% GSAA
23-8-6 2.21 2.48 .923 .827 14.81

Jarry finally has the benefit of backstopping a fully healthy Penguins lineup after the club battled numerous ailments throughout the majority of the first half of the season. His dominant play helped keep his team in games early on, and he's still not slowing down. He's won 13 of his last 17 contests and will certainly be looking to keep it up down the stretch.

3. Juuse Saros, Nashville Predators

Christopher Mast / National Hockey League / Getty

Previous rank: N/A

RECORD GAA XGA/60 SV% HDSV% GSAA
24-11-3 2.35 2.75 .927 .866 21.57

Saros has been a model of consistency since taking over the crease from Pekka Rinne in Nashville. He's as solid as they come and gives the Predators a legitimate shot to win every single time he's in the crease. The team wasn't expected to be too competitive this year, but Saros' play is keeping them afloat in the standings.

2. Frederik Andersen, Carolina Hurricanes

Richard T Gagnon / Getty Images Sport / Getty

Previous rank: 4

RECORD GAA XGA/60 SV% HDSV% GSAA
24-6-0 2.01 2.72 .929 .825 16.52

Andersen had a scorching hot start to the season with the Hurricanes but came back down to earth a little bit. Unfortunately for the rest of the NHL, he's heating up again. He's won 13 of his last 14 starts and has allowed over three goals just once during that span. The well-rounded Hurricanes tend to make life a bit easier for Andersen, but he's a big reason the club is firmly sitting atop the Metropolitan Division.

1. Igor Shesterkin, New York Rangers

Brad Penner / Getty Images Sport / Getty

Previous rank: 2

RECORD GAA XGA/60 SV% HDSV% GSAA
22-5-2 2.10 2.98 .937 .871 25.67

Is the trophy Shesterkin's to lose at this point? The Rangers continue to hover near the top of the league standings, and so much of their success hinges on the goaltender's play. He ranks first in the league with an astute 25.67 goals saved above average and ranks second with an impressive .871 high-danger save percentage. It's even fair to say Shesterkin has a legitimate shot at the Hart Trophy if he keeps it up in the second half of the season.

Honorable mentions: Jack Campbell, Jacob Markstrom, Andrei Vasilevskiy

Rangers retire Lundqvist’s jersey

King Henrik will forever be enshrined in the rafters of Madison Square Garden.

The New York Rangers retired legendary goaltender Henrik Lundqvist's No. 30 jersey Friday night. He's the 11th player in franchise history to have his number retired.

"The highs were high but the lows were low, and there was not much in between," Lundqvist said during the ceremony. "And that's how I chose to live my life for the past 20 years and 15 here in New York, it never really changed.

"Playing well and trying to help the team to win - that was so important to me."

He added: "While I reflect on my time here in New York - everything I experienced, the people I've met, and what the game has given me - I keep coming back to one feeling, and that's gratitude. I feel so grateful for everything this organization has given me, supporting me and my family."

The 39-year-old announced his retirement from the NHL in August after 15 seasons, all of which he spent backstopping the Rangers. He retired as the franchise leader in both regular-season and playoff wins, shutouts, and games played.

Lundqvist didn't capture a Stanley Cup during his time with the Rangers, but he came close on a number of occasions. He helped the team reach the 2014 Stanley Cup Final and put together many other promising playoff runs.

Rangers general manager Chris Drury, who was once Lundqvist's teammate, commended the Swede on Friday, saying he was a perfect example of what it means to be a Ranger.

"You want to be like Hank. His desire, determination, will to win," Drury said, according to ESPN's Greg Wyshynski. "His dedication to his craft, along with his talent and skill level. His commitment to this community and this city. He is, for me, the gold standard for what a New York Ranger is, and what a New York Ranger should be for this generation of players."

Lundqvist finished his career with a 459-310-96 record, a .918 save percentage, and a 2.43 goals-against average. He captured one Vezina Trophy in 2012 and was nominated for the award five times. He also led Team Sweden to a gold medal at the 2006 Olympic Games and a silver in 2014.

Montembeault praises Zegras’ Michigan goal: ‘Have to tip your cap to him’

Upon his return from a wrist injury, Montreal Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault immediately gave up a goal of the year candidate to Anaheim Ducks rookie Trevor Zegras.

But even Montembeault had to respect Zegras' sensational effort.

"I hadn't played in a week and only had one practice, so I would have liked to have had a different type of shot as a first shot," Montembeault said postgame, according to The Athletic's Arpon Basu. "But it was a really nice goal, have to tip your cap to him."

Zegras stunned the Canadiens by scoring a lacrosse-style Michigan goal early in the second period. The move typically involves a player picking the puck up while stationed behind the net, but Zegras did it casually in stride.

This is Zegras' second jaw-dropping play this season. Earlier this campaign, he went viral for making an alley-oop pass from behind the net, which teammate Sonny Milano batted in out of midair.

Zegras joked postgame that he was trying to deflate the non-existent crowd at the Bell Centre. The Canadiens are one of the only NHL teams that currently has no fans in the stands due to local COVID-19 restrictions.

"Honestly, I just tried to take the crowd out of it. ... (The) atmosphere was pretty crazy tonight," Zegras said. "It was one of those things to try to get the crowd out of it, for sure."

Montembeault entered the game in relief of Cayden Primeau, who allowed three goals on nine shots. Despite losing 5-4, Montembeault laughed at the fact that he'll probably have to relive the goal plenty of times in the coming days.

"I'm going to see myself on TSN or ESPN for a week, so not happy about that," Montembeault said. "But it was a great move."

Zegras has now tallied 12 goals and 20 assists in 40 contests this season, firmly entrenching himself in the Calder Trophy conversation.

Sabres’ Dell suspended 3 games for interference on Senators’ Batherson

The NHL suspended Buffalo Sabres goaltender Aaron Dell three games for interference on Ottawa Senators forward Drake Batherson during Tuesday's contest, the league's Department of Player Safety announced.

Here's a look at the play that sent Batherson crashing into the boards:

Senators head coach DJ Smith said postgame that Batherson is expected to be sidelined long term with an ankle injury. The ailment is believed to be a high-ankle sprain, and the club will have a better recovery timeline when the swelling goes down, according to Postmedia's Bruce Garrioch.

Batherson, who leads Ottawa with 34 points, was slated to attend his first All-Star Game next week but was ruled out due to the injury. Teammate Brady Tkachuk is replacing him.
