Sharks trade Dillon to Capitals for 2 picks

The San Jose Sharks traded defenseman Brenden Dillon to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a 2020 second-round pick and a conditional 2021 third-round pick, the Capitals announced Tuesday.

San Jose will retain 50% of Dillon's salary and cap hit. Additionally, the Capitals will trade their own 2021 third-round pick unless they win the Stanley Cup, in which case they will give up the Arizona Coyotes' 2020 third-round selection, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

The 2020 second-round pick was originally acquired from the Colorado Avalance.

Dillon, 29, recorded one goal and 14 points in 59 games this season with the Sharks. He led San Jose in hits (178) and ranked fourth in blocked shots (67) while averaging 19:22 of ice time per game.

Sens trade DeMelo to Jets for 3rd-round pick

The Ottawa Senators traded defenseman Dylan DeMelo to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a 2020 third-round pick, the team announced Tuesday.

DeMelo, 26, was a part of the trade package Ottawa received from the San Jose Sharks in the Erik Karlsson deal. The pending UFA carries a cap hit of $900K this season.

The blue-liner has played well with the Senators, chipping in 10 assists in 49 games while averaging 19:55 of ice time. In his first season in Ottawa last year, he managed four goals and 22 points in 77 games.

Ottawa now owns two first-round picks, three second-round picks, and two third-round picks in the upcoming draft.

Avs’ Grubauer out indefinitely with lower-body injury

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Philipp Grubauer is out with a lower-body injury that doesn't have a definitive return timeline, head coach Jared Bednar said Monday, according to The Denver Post's Kyle Fredrickson.

Additionally, Bednar said forward Matt Calvert will be sidelined for a couple of weeks with a lower-body injury.

Grubauer was injured during Saturday's Stadium Series game when he collided with teammate Ian Cole. He left the game and did not return.

The netminder has already missed time this year due to injury, paving the way for backup Pavel Francouz to man the crease on a number of occasions. Francouz has started 19 games this season, putting together a 13-5-2 record with a 2.44 goals-against average and .925 save percentage.

Grubauer has appeared in 36 contests, managing an 18-12-4 record with a 2.63 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.

Calvert has been a key player on the team's third line. He's racked up 12 goals and 25 points in 50 games.

Weber could return Tuesday, weeks before original injury timetable

The Montreal Canadiens could have their captain back much sooner than expected.

Defenseman Shea Weber may return Tuesday versus the Detroit Red Wings, head coach Claude Julien announced Monday.

The veteran defenseman was diagnosed with a sprained ankle after seeing a foot specialist last Wednesday and was given a recovery period of four-to-six weeks. However, Weber returned to practice Monday, just days after the diagnosis and around two weeks after he suffered the injury Feb. 4 against the New Jersey Devils.

Julien added that Montreal's medical staff doesn't believe there are issues with Weber returning to action faster than originally anticipated, according to TSN's John Lu.

Weber leads the Canadiens in ice time with an average of 24:18 per game this season and has recorded 13 goals and 34 points through 55 contests in 2019-20.

Habs’ Julien fined $10K for criticizing referees

Montreal Canadiens head coach Claude Julien has been fined $10,000 for critical comments he made about officials following his team's 4-3 loss to the Dallas Stars on Saturday, the league announced Monday.

Julien was irate after Montreal's overtime defeat. He said several penalty calls were missed late in the game and called the officiating "embarrassing."

The Canadiens were up 3-0 on Dallas before giving up four unanswered goals. They didn't receive any power-play time in the loss.

Julien specifically believed the officials missed calls relating to Montreal forwards Joel Armia and Max Domi. He said Armia was hooked in overtime and Domi was clipped in the mouth by an opposing player's stick, drawing blood.

Jeremy Roenick not returning to NBC

Jeremy Roenick will not be returning to NBC Sports after the network suspended him in December for making inappropriate comments about his co-workers.

"I'm very disappointed and angry today. I will not be returning to NBC," Roenick said in a video he posted Wednesday. "Though disappointed, I'm also grateful that I've had the opportunity to share my love, my passion, my knowledge of the game with millions of people, millions of fans, and for that I thank you."

He added, "I will not be gone for long. I'll be back better and more motivated to bring you the best entertainment and the best that I have for the game of hockey. I've seen all the support, I've read all the support, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It's overwhelming."

Roenick was suspended from the network Dec. 23 after the release of an episode of the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast. As a guest, he made comments about the appearance of broadcasters Kathryn Tappen, Patrick Sharp, and Anson Carter, including sexual comments about Tappen and Sharp. He later said that he'd gone too far and personally apologized to those involved.

The former NHL star was hired by NBC in 2010 shortly after his retirement and was a hockey panelist until his suspension.

Jets ink head coach Maurice to multi-year extension

The Winnipeg Jets and head coach Paul Maurice agreed to a multi-year contract extension, the team announced Wednesday. Details of the contract have not been revealed.

Maurice joined the Jets during the 2014 season and has recorded a 264-186-53 regular-season record with the club. He's guided Winnipeg to the postseason three times, which included a trip to the Western Conference Final in 2018.

"I love working here," Maurice said Wednesday after the announcement. "There's lots of challenges that come with a young team but that keeps you moving and growing as a coach and getting better.

"Priority (No. 1), is you've got a family and you want them to enjoy their lives as well, and Winnipeg has given us so much more than we've given the city. For my kids, and their friends and family, and my wife as well, this truly is our home now. ... Being able to stay and work for the Winnipeg Jets is perfect."

The 22-year veteran coach has also overseen the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers during his career. He ranks sixth in NHL history in games coached (1587) and seventh in wins (724).

Additionally, Maurice currently has the second-longest tenure of any active NHL head coach (502), trailing only Tampa Bay Lightning bench boss Jon Cooper.

The 23-year-old has registered seven goals and 14 points over 35 games in 2019-20, his first season at the NHL level.

He was a seventh-round pick in 2014 and has appeared in 94 AHL games over the past three seasons with the Toronto Marlies, racking up 30 goals and 56 points.

Wild GM Guerin: ‘If there is quit, there will be more trades’

Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin means business in his first season with the team.

Guerin warned his club Tuesday that more trades may be on the horizon, just one day after dealing veteran Jason Zucker to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"I can promise you this: if there is quit, there will be more trades," Guerin told reporters. "I wholeheartedly expect this team to compete for a playoff spot, we're right there. If there's any signs of anybody taking their foot off the gas, that will be an indication."

The Wild received Alex Galchenyuk, as well as a top prospect and first-round draft pick for Zucker.

Guerin knows he needs to match the effort he's asking for from his players if the team is to make a postseason run.

"We're going to do our best, we know where we stand right now and what we need to address and we'll keep working towards it," Guerin added. "Like I've said in the past, I'm not going to make trades just to try to make trades and fabricate something that's not good enough. If a deal makes sense we'll do it. If it doesn't, then we'll be patient and we'll wait."

The Wild sit in sixth place in the Central Division with a 26-23-6 record, but are just five points out of the second wild-card spot.

Seth Jones out 8-10 weeks after surgery on fractured ankle

Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones will miss the next 8-to-10 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured ankle on Tuesday, the team announced.

Jones suffered the injury in a game versus the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.

The Blue Jackets will sorely miss Jones, who leads the team in ice time per game (25:17) and has chipped in six goals and 30 points in 56 appearances. He also leads the league in defensive-zone blocked passes this season, according to The Point Hockey.

There are eight weeks remaining in the regular season, and Columbus is in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race. At 30-17-10, the Blue Jackets occupy the first wild-card spot in the conference. Since Jan. 1, they've posted the NHL's second-best record.
