Marner says Bieber is better hockey player than he expected

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner was impressed with what he saw from Justin Bieber during their holiday shinny game.

"He's actually better than I thought he was," Marner told NHL.com's Dave McCarthy after him, Auston Matthews, and Tyson Barrie hit the ice with Bieber. "He's got pretty good hands and a pretty good shot on him. I think he surprised us."

Marner said he and Matthews had been talking to Bieber about getting together for a game since the pop star attended the Maple Leafs' 4-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 25. The opportunity came Thursday while Bieber was back in his hometown of Stratford, Ontario for the holidays.

Marner and Matthews played on a team with Bieber, while Barrie skated with the other group.

"We had to take it a little easy," Barrie said. "It was a great crew of guys. It was just for fun, it was Christmas holidays for the boys, they were just coming from work, having a few beers and having some fun. It was a cool experience."

Former Humboldt player Ryan Straschnitzki takes 1st steps since crash

Former Humboldt Broncos player Ryan Straschnitzki is walking again for the first time since being paralyzed from the chest down in the team's fatal bus crash in April 2018.

Straschnitzki's father, Tom, shared a video Wednesday on Twitter showing his son taking his first steps with help from a therapist.

Straschnitzki underwent surgery in Thailand earlier this month to have a stimulator implanted in his back, according to Leah Murray of Air 106.1 FM. The stimulator uses electrical currents to stimulate nerves, allowing Straschnitzki to move his legs and gain more core control.

"The therapist (told Ryan), 'You're going for a walk,'" Tom said. "I didn't think he was ready, I was afraid his knees would buckle or his ankles, but they made him go and he was training his brain.

"I went, 'Holy shit, last time he walked was when he walked onto the bus.'"

Crosby donates All-Star Game MVP car to veteran

Ahead of Veterans Day, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby surprised a local veteran by gifting her the car he won for being named MVP at the 2019 NHL All-Star Game.

The recipient of the car - a 2019 Honda Passport - was 28-year-old Madeline Malizio, who has served as an Army Specialist for the past five years and is going to school for legal studies, according to Sam Kasan of NHL.com. She's also a single mother to a 3-year-old son.

After learning Malizio didn't own a car, Crosby decided to help. He met her inside the Penguins' locker room following practice Friday and then took her to the facility at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, where the car was waiting.

"He was telling me how he heard about my story and he wanted to do something to help my situation," Malizio said. "I was confused. I wasn't sure what he could be talking about. He puts the garage up and it's this car. I felt weak in my knees. I felt speechless. I don't really think there is a word to describe how you feel in that moment."

Report: ‘Mighty Ducks’ reboot in development for Disney+

"The Mighty Ducks" reboot is reportedly moving forward.

A series based on the 1990s hockey movie franchise is being developed for Disney's new streaming service, Disney+, with production expected to begin February in Vancouver, according to Discussing Film. Rumors of a reboot first surfaced in January 2018.

The new series will reportedly center around a 13-year-old boy who gets cut from the junior division Mighty Ducks team. The boy and his mother then start their own squad by finding other players, a coach, and somewhere to play.

"The Mighty Ducks" was released in 1992 and was followed by two sequels and an animated television series. Several members of the original cast reunited for a ceremonial puck drop at a game between the Anaheim Ducks and Vancouver Canucks last season.

Kessel says he never used lonely theater room in Pittsburgh house

Phil Kessel's suburban Pittsburgh home hit the real estate market this summer following his trade to the Arizona Coyotes, and it quickly went viral thanks to a photo of its single-seat theater room.

Kessel explained during a Tuesday interview with NHL Network that there was a good reason for the emptiness: he never used the room.

"I was selling my house and, you know, there's nothing in there, right? It was used as a bedroom, like a blow-up mattress and everything," Kessel said. "I actually never used that movie room one time, but my realtor's wife thought it was a good thing to put in there one chair or something, look like I used it or something. But, I don't know. I never used it one time there."

Kessel's realtor, Dave Tumpa, said they thought the single chair "would be cute" and highlight the size of the room.

The listing for the house is still up, so it appears it hasn't sold yet.

P.K. Subban, Lindsey Vonn announce engagement

New Jersey Devils defenseman P.K. Subban and Olympic gold medal-winning skier Lindsey Vonn are engaged.

The couple, who started dating in June 2018, broke the news in an interview with Alexandra Macon of Vogue.

"I got the ring and said, 'You know what, I'm just going to do it (at) home,'" Subban said. "Everything kind of came together on that day. Everyone says the stars aligned - well, it was actually a full moon. I was worried because I knew she would want to be dressed up and not in her pajamas, and it just so happened she had a business meeting, so she was fully dressed up."

Vonn said they aren't in a rush to walk down the aisle and are focused on settling in for the upcoming NHL season - Subban's first with the Devils following a summer trade from the Nashville Predators.

"We're in such a busy time right now. We're trying to move to New Jersey," she explained. "I just want to enjoy the moment and the engagement. We're not in a big hurry to get married. It kind of depends on his playing schedule, and when we have time to sit down and go through it. I don't want to stress him out because he has a big season coming."

Humboldt Broncos advance to playoffs nearly 1 year after bus crash

The Humboldt Broncos have secured a spot in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoffs, according to The Canadian Press.

Humboldt rebuilt much of its roster following the April 2018 bus crash that left 16 people dead - including 10 Broncos players - and 13 others injured. Brayden Camrud and Derek Patter were the lone survivors from last year's team to return this season.

The Broncos finished the regular season with a 35-19-3-1 record and 74 points, good for sixth place in the league. Humboldt will face the Estevan Bruins in the first round of the playoffs Friday.

On Monday, Morgan Gobeil became the last Broncos player to be released from the hospital after 333 days. His family said in a statement that he has yet to regain his speech or his ability to walk, but they "remain hopeful" about his recovery.
