Blues’ Schenn no fan of ‘crazy’ Stastny trade

The St. Louis Blues have moved on from center Paul Stastny, but his subtraction from the locker room isn't sitting well with fellow forward Brayden Schenn.

"(It's) crazy. One or two points out, move a guy that does a lot for us," Schenn told Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic. "But at the end of the day, you know, that's their decision."

A pending unrestricted free agent, the Blues dealt Stastny to the division rival Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a two draft picks - including a first rounder - plus forward prospect Erik Foley.

As for the Blues, the team has hit the skids in recent weeks, dropping six straight contests, including two games without a goal. That's pushed St. Louis outside of the playoff picture, one point behind the Calgary Flames for the second wild-card seed.

Stastny departs the Blues as the team's fourth-leading scorer, behind Schenn, Vladimir Tarasenko, and Jaden Schwartz. He has 40 points through 63 games this season.

Staal, Rinne, Getzlaf named NHL’s 3 stars of the week

Eric Staal scored his 30th goal of the season Sunday, and a day later was named the NHL's first star of the week.

In his past four games, Staal picked up three goals and four assists to lead the Wild to four-straight victories and the third seed in the Central Division. Staal leads Minnesota in scoring with 59 points.

Nashville Predators netminder Pekka Rinne is the second star of the week after posting a perfect 3-0 record alongside a 1.00 goals-against average and .970 save percentage. The stretch included a 4-0 shutout win over the St. Louis Blues.

Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf was named the third star of the week after netting seven points in four games, including five assists. His top performance included a four-point outing Sunday against the Edmonton Oilers.

Report: Parameters set for Plekanec to return to Canadiens as free agent

Tomas Plekanec has been traded to the Maple Leafs, but his time in Toronto may only be for a short stint.

While the longtime Montreal Canadiens forward was dealt to the rival club Sunday, his time in Toronto may not be for long, as the pending unrestricted free agent has already established the contract parameters to sign back with the Canadiens this offseason, reports Sportsnet's Eric Engels.

Plekanec does not carry a no-trade pact, but the only club he has ever known respected his wishes Sunday by keeping him in the Eastern Conference. That will surely play into the Canadiens' favor should Plekanec reach free agency.

Plekanec was drafted by the Canadiens in 2001. His 981 games played ranks seventh in franchise history.

Report: Canadiens getting more calls on Plekanec amid Brassard trade talks

Call it the domino effect.

With Ottawa Senators center Derick Brassard reportedly on the move, teams are now turning their attention to Montreal Canadiens pivot Tomas Plekanec, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reports.

The veteran center is a pending unrestricted free agent and is a prime target to be dealt ahead of Monday's trade deadline, particularly with the Canadiens sitting outside of the playoff race.

Plekanec, 35, has spent his entire career with the Canadiens, and has been a steady offensive contributor up until the past two campaigns. Through 60 games this season, Plekanec has tallied six goals and 18 assists.

Report: Nash would accept trade to Maple Leafs

Rick Nash is willing to leave the Big Apple for the Big Smoke.

With the New York Rangers prepared to enter a rebuild, the team approached the veteran forward - who carries a modified no-trade clause - to provide a list of clubs to which he'd be willing to accept a trade.

Earlier reports indicated Canadian-bound playoff teams are among the 12 places Nash is willing to go, while TSN's Frank Seravalli has since confirmed the Toronto Maple Leafs are among his approved teams.

"I included the teams that I think have the best chance of winning the Stanley Cup and are also places I think would be good for my family," Nash told Larry Brooks of the New York Post. "And, yes, that does include teams in Canada. I'm not excluding that as a possibility."

A move to the Maple Leafs would be a homecoming of sorts for Nash, who hails from nearby Brampton, Ontario.

The 33-year-old is a pending unrestricted free agent who could provide playoff-bound teams, including the Maple Leafs, with some added size and scoring touch in a chase for the Stanley Cup.

Nash has tallied 17 goals and 10 assists through 56 games this season.

Seravalli adds the Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators are among the frontrunners to acquire Nash.

Canadiens’ Gallagher on Subban: ‘Let him talk about himself all night’

Brendan Gallagher may have shed a little more light on some old friction between P.K. Subban and the Montreal Canadiens.

With Subban and the Nashville Predators in town Saturday to take on the Canadiens - his second game at the Bell Centre since being traded in a June 2016 blockbuster - the blue-liner had a quiet night, as he was held pointless and picked up a minus-one rating. However, a shootout goal by Ryan Ellis was enough to seal the 3-2 victory for the Predators.

While Subban wasn't a factor, his return seemingly irked at least one member of the Canadiens.

"I don't know why you're asking about him," Gallagher told Eric Engels of Sportsnet postgame. "I think he was - you know, they got a lot of good players. I don't know, what was he? Minus-1 in the game? They have a lot of other reasons why we lost tonight. They're a good team. ...

"He was talking, doing what he does. But, like I said, I don't know why we're talking about him. That's kind of what he wants. He came in here and tried to make it about P.K. Subban, which is what he does. ...

"You can let him talk about himself all night."

Just as Gallagher predicted, Subban had something to say postgame, too.

"I didn't see a smile from (Gallagher) tonight, to be honest with you," Subban told Engels. "I just saw the blood dripping down his face when he tried to hit me and fell down."

The Predators took both contests against the Canadiens this season, with both wins coming in the shootout.

Maple Leafs’ Marner records 5-point night vs. Sens

Mitch Marner had himself a night.

The Toronto Maple Leafs sophomore notched a career-high five points versus the rival Ottawa Senators on Saturday, as he collected two goals and a trio of assists in the Maple Leafs' 6-3 win.

The total brings Marner to 42 points on the season, and closer to the type of production he saw as a freshman:

Season GP G A Pts Pts/GP
2016-17 77 19 42 61 0.79
2017-18 57 12 30 42 0.74

After a slow start to the season, Marner has had the hot stick in recent weeks, as he's tallied 10 points in his past eight outings.

The Maple Leafs forward nearly set another career first Saturday, as his first assist came on a deflected goal by James van Riemsdyk, negating Marner of what would have been his first career hat-trick.

Marner is the first Maple Leafs skater to pick up five points in a game since former Toronto blue-liner Tomas Kaberle registered a goal and four assists Oct. 26, 2009 against the Anaheim Ducks.
