Report: League executives to discuss fighting in junior hockey

The heads of all three branches of the Canadian Hockey League will meet Wednesday, with the role of fighting in junior hockey set to be on the agenda.

CHL president Dave Branch - who also serves as commissioner of the Ontario Hockey League - added fighting to the agenda for a meeting with Western Hockey League commissioner Ron Robison and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League commissioner Gilles Courteau after a column by James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail made waves in hockey circles over the past few days.

"I want to hear what Ron and Gilles have to say," Branch told Bob McKenzie of TSN. "It's a good discussion to have, to see where we agree or disagree, what challenges are involved. It's always better if (the three leagues that comprise the CHL) have the same rules but it's not necessarily essential either. That's why I put it on the agenda."

While fighting is down 16 percent in the OHL this season, and has decreased in each of the past six seasons, but the call to ban fighting altogether in junior hockey appears to be rising.

Coyotes’ Tinordi suspended 20 games for violating PED policy

Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jarred Tinordi has been suspended 20 games, without pay, for violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program, the league has announced.

The suspension carries a mandatory referral to the NHL/NHLPA Program for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health for evaluation and possible treatment, as per the collective bargaining agreement.

Tinordi released the following statement through the NHL Players' Association:

I am extremely disappointed that I failed a test under the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. I did not knowingly take a banned substance. I understand, however, that I am responsible for what enters my body as a professional athlete and I accept the suspension. I will work hard towards my return to the ice and will learn from this frustrating setback.

Coyotes general manager Don Maloney expressed his support for the decision, and for Tinordi.

"Late (Tuesday) afternoon, we were made aware of the situation regarding Jarred Tinordi," Maloney said in a statement. "The Arizona Coyotes organization fully supports the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. We will also continue to support Jarred throughout this process. We will have no further comment at this time."

Tinordi appeared in seven games for the Coyotes after being acquired from Montreal in the John Scott trade, failing to record a point with his new club.

Reimer blanks Oilers for 1st shutout with Sharks

James Reimer turned away all 31 Edmonton Oilers shots to pick up his first shutout as a member of the San Jose Sharks in a 3-0 win Tuesday.

For the former Toronto Maple Leaf, the goose egg was his first shutout of the season and first since Oct. 29, 2013 - also against the Oilers.

The 27-year-old rebounded from a mediocre first appearance with the Sharks that saw him allow three goals on 25 shots in a 4-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

Forward Logan Couture led the way offensively for San Jose with two goals as the team moved within a win of the Los Angeles Kings for second in the Pacific Division.

Galchenyuk a shining light on a dark Canadiens season

The Montreal Canadiens snapped a four-game losing streak Tuesday thanks to the inspiring play of Alex Galchenyuk.

The 22-year-old scored twice, including the overtime winner. He also added an assist as the Canadiens got by the Dallas Stars 4-3.

The game proved to be another showcase of one of the club's lone achievements this season. With his three-point effort Tuesday, Galchenyuk is now tied with captain Max Pacioretty for the team lead with 23 goals - a career high - and 44 points, just two shy of his career mark.

Galchenyuk has been on an incendiary pace while his club continues to struggle without No. 1 goalie Carey Price. The team has dropped four of its last five games and sits seven points outside of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

However, Galchenyuk has not slowed down. With a pair of goals Tuesday, he now has four multi-goal games in his last seven contests. His offensive production has been key for the Canadiens as his nine goals make up 45 percent of the team's total output in the last seven games.

Arguably the biggest catalyst for the growth in Galchenyuk's game appears to be the confidence head coach Michel Therrien has shown in the youngster.

Galchenyuk entered the season finally getting a chance to play center, his native position, after being used largely as a winger early in his career. Things have since changed with him now occupying the team's top trio.

Meanwhile, Galchenyuk took to the ice for 19:10 of ice-time on - second amongst the team's forwards behind only Pacioretty.

The Canadiens are far from being the team that took to the ice last season, but best be sure that Galchenyuk is also not the same player he once was.

Skinner’s buzzer-beater helps propel Hurricanes past Senators

Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner spoiled the party for the Ottawa Senators when they were less than a second away from victory Tuesday.

Skinner fired home his second goal of the game with just 0.3 seconds remaining on the clock to knot the game 3-3, setting the stage for defenseman Jaccob Slavin's shootout winner to complete the 4-3 comeback win.

Skinner hit the 25-goal mark for the third time in his career with the two markers while moving the Hurricanes within four points of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Meanwhile, anyone expecting a Cinderella-type surge like the one the Senators achieved last season is quickly being let down. With Tuesday's loss, Ottawa's dropped four of its last five games and has fallen behind Carolina in the standings.

The Senators will look to get back on track when they take on the Florida Panthers on Thursday, while the Hurricanes look to ride the momentum into Boston for their tilt against the Bruins.

VIDEO: Bruins’ Marchand scores game-winner 10 seconds into overtime

The Boston Bruins are tied for the Atlantic Division lead with the Tampa Bay Lightning after beating their rivals in overtime Tuesday, with Brad Marchand scoring the game-winner - and the game's only goal - just 10 seconds into the extra frame.

The game-winner continues an incredible season for Marchand, whose 34th goal trails only Alex Ovechkin and Patrick Kane this season.

The win also makes the race for the Atlantic Division title that much tighter, with the top three teams now all within a point.

Atlantic Division standings

Boston 68 38 23 7 83

Canucks sign Nikita Tryamkin to entry-level contract

After a few days of speculation, the Vancouver Canucks have signed defenseman Nikita Tryamkin to an entry-level contract, the team confirmed.

The 21-year old recently wrapped up his fourth season in the KHL, finishing with career highs in goals (four) and assists (seven) over 53 games. He was selected by the Canucks in the third round of the 2014 draft.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports there is an out clause in Tryamkin's contract in case he decides leave the NHL. He's expected to make $925,000 in each of the next two seasons, according to General Fanager.

VIDEO: Sharks’ Couture nets easy tap-in on oblivious Talbot

Logan Couture caught Cam Talbot napping.

The San Jose Sharks forward collected his ninth goal of the season poking in a loose puck that sat at Talbot's feet. The Edmonton Oilers netmidner appeared to lose sight of it after he made a shoulder save on Couture.

The blunder comes after Talbot was named the NHL's first star last week. Couture snapped a seven-game goalless skid.

It wasn't pretty, but he'll take it.

VIDEO: Bruins’ Liles not penalized after hit to head of Nikita Kucherov

Boston Bruins defenseman John-Michael Liles somehow escaped a trip to the penalty box for a hit during Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, but it won't be a shock if he hears from the NHL's Department of Player Safety.

During the first period, Liles delivered a dangerous forearm to the head of Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov, who struggled to get back to his feet.

Kucherov, Tampa's leading scorer, went straight to the dressing room, but returned for the start of the second.

Canadiens’ Gallagher out 2-3 weeks with lower-body injury

During the first period of their Tuesday night meeting with the Dallas Stars, the Montreal Canadiens announced forward Brendan Gallagher will miss the next two-to-three weeks with a lower-body injury.

The 23-year-old left the game after doing the splits and suffering an apparent groin injury, according to Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette. He finished with just 4:52 of ice time.

Gallagher has 18 goals and 17 assists in 49 games this season. He joins a crowded injury list for the Canadiens, who are already without a number of key players.
