Watch: Crosby nets 500th NHL goal

Add another accolade to Sidney Crosby's resume.

The Pittsburgh Penguins captain scored his 500th career goal Tuesday night against the rival Philadelphia Flyers, becoming the 46th player in NHL history to join the illustrious club.

The tally was Crosby's 50th all time against his in-state rivals, the most he's recorded against any opponent in his 17-year career.

Crosby joins Mario Lemieux as the only player to score 500 goals with the club, and is now the 18th player in league history to reach the mark with a single franchise.

Coyotes have faith in joint arena plan: ‘This isn’t putting lipstick on a pig’

Many mocked the Arizona Coyotes when news broke of the vagabond franchise sharing a 5,000-seat rink with Arizona State for at least the next three seasons, but the club is confident the idea is crazy enough to work.

"All I can say to those players who have concerns is: I understand it. Because they’re hearing from the outside that, 'This is a college arena,' and 'It's so small,' and 'Do these guys really have a plan?' I can tell you, this is a plan, we have it, and we’re willing to put our capital behind it," Coyotes president and CEO Xavier Gutierrez told Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports.

"This is a brand-new facility. This isn't putting lipstick on a pig. This is a state-of-the-art, brand-new facility. We are putting in over $25 million to make it to NHL standard."

Morgan provided an idea of how the rink, which is still under construction, will look Monday:

"We are very hopeful that - given the central location, given this rabid fan base, this rabid corporate base, and so many community partners who have asked us to look at much more centrally located options - that the demand is there," Gutierrez said.

"This is a hockey town. We’ve said this from the beginning: What we've needed is an arena solution in order to really super-serve that demand and that fan base and that fan-base-in-waiting."

The Coyotes were forced to find a new home after the city of Glendale ended its lease agreement for use of Gila River Arena. The club is still awaiting approval for the bid on a new permanent rink in Tempe it filed in September.

McDavid, Draisaitl ‘all-in’ on Woodcroft’s new ideas

Edmonton Oilers superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are committed to embracing any systematic changes new head coach Jay Woodcroft intends to make.

Woodcroft was brought in to replace Dave Tippett, who was fired Thursday after 16 losses in 23 games.

"Obviously, something needs to change," McDavid said, according to NHL.com's Tim Campbell. "'Woody' is going to come in and put his touch on the group and put his touch on the team. And as players, that's what we want. We're all in this together.

The reigning MVP continued, "I think people forget that we're here to win. We're up here and we come in each and every day and we want to win. We haven't found the formula yet but that's all we want to do. Whatever system (Woodcroft) puts into place, we're happy to play."

Draisaitl echoed his captain's sentiments.

"We need to change something, obviously, and I'm sure 'Woody' will come in with new ideas, with his philosophy, and with his plan, and we're all-in on that," Draisaitl said. "We've got open ears and we're ready to go."

Woodcroft is Edmonton's fourth coach in seven years since McDavid was drafted first overall in 2015. The Oilers are under immense pressure to qualify for the playoffs this spring after being swept in the first round last season but currently sit outside the Western Conference's postseason cut line with 49 points in 44 games.

Woodcroft has never held an NHL head coaching position but is an experienced assistant at the top level and is familiar with several Oilers players due to his time at the helm of Edmonton's AHL affiliate in Bakersfield.

Report: Cammi Granato joining Canucks front office

The Vancouver Canucks are adding American hockey icon Cammi Granato to their hockey operations department, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

The role is unconfirmed, but Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports Granato will serve as assistant general manager.

Granato was previously working with the Seattle Kraken as a pro scout. She became the first woman in NHL history to hold the title when Seattle hired her in 2019.

The Canucks hired Emilie Castonguay as an assistant general manager last month.

Granato is one of the most decorated women's hockey players ever. She captained the United States to gold at the 1998 Olympics and retired as the all-time leading scorer in women's international hockey. She was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010 and is one of two women on the institution's selection committee.

Rask retires after 15 seasons

Veteran Boston Bruins netminder Tuukka Rask announced his retirement from the NHL after 15 seasons on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old returned from hip surgery this season, but he only appeared in four games before opting to hang up his pads for good.

"Today is a day that I hoped would never come. But now that it's here, I feel I owe it to everyone to hear it from me," Rask said in a statement.

He continued: "Over these last few weeks, I've realized that my body is not responding the way it needs to for me to play at the level I expect of myself and that my teammates and Bruins fans deserve. Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from the game of hockey."

Rask was a first-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2005. He was dealt to the Bruins the following year, where he authored a Hall of Fame worthy career.

The Finland native made 564 appearances for the Bruins, finishing his career with the fourth-best save percentage in league history among qualified goaltenders.

Blues sign Berube to 3-year extension

The St. Louis Blues signed head coach Craig Berube to a three-year extension through the 2024-25 season, the team announced Wednesday.

"I've enjoyed working with (general manager) Doug Armstrong and (chairman) Tom Stillman, working with the coaching staff and training staff and all the players we have here," Berube said. "Why would I want to go anywhere else? I love it here."

Berube took over the Blues' bench in 2018 and brought the club from last place to a Stanley Cup championship the following spring. It was the first title in franchise history.

The Blues own a 133-72-30 regular-season record and have made the playoffs in each of the past three campaigns with Berube at the helm.

St. Louis is in the thick of the postseason race again this season, currently holding the fourth-best points percentage (.648) in the Western Conference through 44 games.

Wild’s Foligno appears to knee Jets’ Lowry in head at end of fight

Minnesota Wild forward Marcus Foligno appeared to knee Winnipeg Jets enforcer Adam Lowry in the head at the end of a fight during Tuesday's spirited affair between the Central Division rivals.

The incident occurred in the third period of Winnipeg's 2-0 win. It was the second fight of the game between the two players.

Here's an alternate angle showing where Foligno made contact.

Foligno was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on top of a fighting major. He said the knee wasn't intentional.

"I saw them complaining about maybe I got a leg in there or something, but that was me just kinda ticked off and trying to get at him," Foligno said, according to The Athletic's Michael Russo. "There was no intent to not throw with your fist or use another body part. ... For me, it was just a heat of the battle."

Foligno is in the midst of a career year with 27 points in 40 games.

Marchand gets match penalty for punching, high-sticking Jarry

Boston Bruins superstar Brad Marchand lost his cool late in Tuesday's loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

After being stopped on a scoring chance in the dying seconds of the third period, Marchand punched goaltender Tristan Jarry in the head, then circled back and jammed his stick into the netminder's mask.

Marchand was assessed a match penalty for intent to injure and a roughing minor. Match penalties are automatically reviewed by the NHL.

"Lack of discipline, obviously, on Brad's part in that situation," Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said after the game, according to The Athletic's Fluto Shinzawa.

He continued, "Brad's a leader on our team. He needs to have control of his emotions in that situation."

Marchand has been suspended seven times in his career, most recently in November for slew-footing Vancouver Canucks defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

On top of Marchand likely missing time due to supplemental discipline, the Bruins also lost Patrice Bergeron to injury in the defeat after a collision with Sidney Crosby. There was no update on the captain's status postgame.

Metro downs Pacific to advance to All-Star Game final

The Metropolitan Division advanced past the Pacific with a 6-4 victory to book a spot in the All-Star Game final Saturday afternoon.

The Metropolitan team will play the winner of the upcoming Atlantic-Central clash.

Enforcer Tom Wilson opened the scoring just 13 seconds in. Timo Meier netted the equalizer a couple of minutes later, but the Metropolitan squad carried a 3-1 lead into the intermission.

The Pacific Division tied things up midway through the final frame, but a pair of goals from Jack Hughes and Jake Guentzel ultimately made the difference.

The Metropolitan has won the All-Star Game twice since the NHL adopted the divisional format in 2016.

Eichel could be cleared for contact after All-Star break

Vegas Golden Knights head coach Pete DeBoer said injured superstar Jack Eichel could be cleared for contact shortly after the club reconvenes from the All-Star break.

"The doctor was adamant that three months from surgery, there would be absolutely no contact," DeBoer said, according to the Review Journal's David Schoen. "I think coming out of this break, that's going to be on the table."

Eichel underwent artificial disc replacement surgery on his neck Nov. 12, shortly after Vegas acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Buffalo Sabres.

He's back skating, but being cleared for contact is the key remaining hurdle before a possible return to game action.

"There's been a couple (practices) in the last week where he's maybe the best player on the ice, so I would say he's progressing pretty well," DeBoer said, per Sportsnet.

"We haven't started contact yet, I think that's the next step, and that's a big step. Obviously, everything changes once we get into full contact, but from a sheer practice and skill point of view, he's elite, elite. Every day we're out with him, I think the group gets more excited."

Eichel's addition to the Golden Knights' lineup could be what the franchise has been looking for to put it over the top. The 25-year-old is one of the top centers in the game, and he recorded 355 points over 375 games with Buffalo.

Vegas leads the Pacific Division through 46 games with 57 points. It returns to the ice after All-Star festivities Feb. 8 versus the Edmonton Oilers.
