Hamonic suffered facial fracture in opening-night fight, out weeks

The Calgary Flames will be without Travis Hamonic for a while.

The defenseman suffered a facial fracture during a fight with Erik Gudbranson in Calgary's season opener on Wednesday and now has a week-to-week status, the club announced Friday.

Defenseman Rasmus Andersson has been called up from the AHL in a corresponding move.

The fight against Gudbranson occurred only 4:22 into the first period. Hamonic later returned to action, receiving 14:35 of ice time.

The 28-year-old is a big part of the Flames' defense. He played 74 games last year in his first season with Calgary, averaging 20-plus minutes of ice time per game.

Andersson was the Flames' second-round pick in 2015. He played 10 games for Calgary in 2017-18.

Arizona sports community pays tribute to John McCain

Senator John McCain died Saturday at 81 years old, after a long battle with brain cancer. Many in the sports world from his home state of Arizona promptly paid their respects to the man who served 31 years in the upper chamber of Congress.

Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald called McCain a "dear friend." Last year, Fitzgerald wrote an article of appreciation for the Republican senator, who as a young man spent more than five years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam conflict.

McCain was also known for his advocacy for boxing reform, trying over the years to institute a national boxing commission.

Sharks bring back Thornton on 1-year deal worth reported $5M

Happy birthday, Jumbo.

The San Jose Sharks signed veteran centerman Joe Thornton, who turned 39 on Monday, to a one-year contract, the club announced. It's worth $5 million and includes a no-trade clause, reports The Athletic's Kevin Kurz.

Thornton's 2017-18 season was cut short by a knee injury, but he still managed to produce a respectable 36 points (13 goals, 23 assists) in 47 games. The future Hall of Famer has 1427 points in 1493 career regular-season contests split between the Sharks and the Boston Bruins.

A year ago to the day, Thornton inked a similar one-year contract worth $8 million.

Report: ‘Action picking up’ on Karlsson trade talks

Forget about free agency - July 1 may be the day Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson is traded from the Canadian capital.

TSN's Bob McKenzie has the details:

Karlsson, 28, is heading into the final season of his contract, which will pay him $6.5 million. He can officially sign an extension with his club on July 1, but it appears more and more unlikely it will be with the Sens.

McKenzie tossed out the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights as potential destinations for the all-world defenseman.

The Senators recently traded Mike Hoffman after revelations that his fiancee allegedly harassed Karlsson's wife, leading to some speculation that Karlsson could stay in Ottawa. However, as ownership and financial issues seemingly continue to dog the Senators, the defenseman may not be amenable to sticking around.

Karlsson is one of hockey's most talented players, and any trade will reverberate across the league.

Report: Sabres to land Hutton on 3-year deal

The Buffalo Sabres reportedly appear set to land free-agent goaltender Carter Hutton on a three-year contract, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The deal will pay Hutton slightly under $3 million per season.

Hutton, 32, was stellar for the St. Louis Blues last season, and appears to have landed his first No. 1 gig in the NHL. He had a .931 save percentage in 32 games in 2017-18, and was thought to be the top goalie available on the market.

Friedman adds that the Sabres will reportedly sign another free-agent goalie in Scott Wedgewood on Sunday. Wedgewood will slot in as the organization's No. 3 goaltender.

Report: Perron headed back to Blues on 4-year deal

David Perron is going back to St. Louis.

The free-agent forward will reportedly sign a four-year, $16-million deal with the Blues when the market officially opens at noon ET on Sunday, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Perron, 30, spent last season with the Vegas Golden Knights, and posted 16 goals and 66 points in 70 games.

He was drafted by the Blues in the first round in 2007, and returns for his third stint in St. Louis. Perron was selected in the expansion draft, and was part of a magical Golden Knights team that went to the Stanley Cup Final in its first season.

Report: Vegas front-runner to land Stastny

The Vegas Golden Knights are the favorites to land free-agent center Paul Stastny, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

Stastny, 32, is thought to be the second-best center on the market, behind John Tavares.

A strong two-way center, Stastny split last season between the St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets. He had 16 goals and 53 points in 82 games.
