Watch: Simmonds scores OT winner after stealing puck from Burns

Wayne Simmonds made Brent Burns pay for a rare miscue.

The Philadelphia Flyers forward stole the puck from the San Jose Sharks defenseman - who's considered a Norris Trophy favorite - and made no mistake on the breakaway opportunity in overtime Saturday.

A Flyers home win over the Sharks was a long time coming.

Watch: Pastrnak scores late beauty to seal victory for Bruins

Not so fast.

With just two minutes remaining in Saturday's affair between the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks, Bruins winger David Pastrnak took control to secure the victory for Boston.

Dashing in from the left wall, Pastrnak fooled Canucks defender Christropher Tanev before burying the winner by Ryan Miller.

The tally marked Pastrnak's 25th of the season, putting him five back of Sidney Crosby for the league lead.

Anderson pitches shutout in 1st game since leave of absence

He didn't miss a beat.

Ottawa netminder Craig Anderson wasted no time making his mark in his return to the lineup Saturday, shutting the door against the New York Islanders as the Senators captured a 3-0 victory.

It was Anderson's first game since Dec. 5, after which he took a leave of absence to be with his ill wife. Saturday's victory was Anderson's 13th on the season.

Despite his limited playing time this year, Anderson's shutout marked his fourth goose egg of 2016-17. Earlier this season, the veteran netminder blanked the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, and New York Rangers.

Grabner rediscovers scoring touch after slow midseason

Michael Grabner is back.

The New York Rangers winger has recaptured his scoring touch after slumping through the season's dog days, rebounding in a big way over the past six weeks:

Month GP Goals Points Goals/GP
October 9 5 6 0.56
November 15 7 10 0.47
December 13 2 3 0.15
January 10 7 9 0.70
February 4 4 5 1.00

Only three players have scored more goals than Grabner this season: Max Pacioretty, Jeff Carter, and Sidney Crosby. Not bad company.

Grabner joined the Rangers on July 1, an under-the-radar free-agent signing after he scored just nine goals with the Toronto Maple Leafs a year ago.

The Austrian-born forward is signed through the 2017-18 campaign, carrying a bargain $1.65-million cap hit.

Watch: Canucks slip buzzer-beater past Khudobin

Just in the nick of time.

That was the case in Boston on Saturday as the Vancouver Canucks tied the score with just 0.6 seconds remaining in the second period.

Canucks forward Alexandre Burrows tallied his eighth goal of the season, beating Bruins netminder Anton Khudobin to level the score 2-2.

Sabres’ Franson out 2-3 weeks with bone bruise

Cody Franson will move to the sidelines.

The Buffalo Sabres defenseman suffered a bone bruise that will keep him out of the lineup for the next two-to-three weeks, coach Dan Bylsma announced Saturday, according to John Vogl of The Buffalo News.

Franson has appeared in 51 games with Buffalo this season, scoring three goals and earning 13 assists.

Former CHL player chastises lawsuit demands for minimum wage

Don't count on Zach Franko joining the class-action lawsuit against the Canadian Hockey League.

On Friday, the 23-year-old blasted the lawsuit that claims the umbrella league - which oversees the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL - owes millions of dollars in outstanding wages, including overtime, holiday, and vacation pay, to more than 300 current and former players who've joined together since the suit was filed in 2014.

"As a proud WHL and CHL alumni, I find it embarrassing that players are asking for more money," Franko wrote. "Tell me what responsibilities do we as 16-20 year-old boys have that we need money for? Our teams cover our gear, living expenses, food, put roofs over our heads, and take us in like one of their own children."

Franko played three seasons with the Kelowna Rockets from 2010-13, splitting the following campaign between Kelowna and the Kootenay Ice. He finished second in Rockets scoring in 2012-13, recording 24 goals and 48 assists in 69 games.

"(The teams) monitor our billet families and make sure we are being taken care of like no other teenager," Franko added. "I am so thankful that my parents can retire years earlier (because) the WHL is paying for my school and I will forever thank them for that."

The WHL awards more than 400 post-secondary scholarships to current and former players each year.

The suit, which includes players who were part of Canadian teams from 2010-16 and U.S.-based clubs from 2008-16, centers on whether players are considered amateur athletes - as the league insists - or business employees, as the players argue.

In October, WHL commissioner Rob Robison told Jon Hernandez of CBC News: "These franchises are not profitable. The industry is not profitable. I think it's a distorted message to send."

On Tuesday, Alberta justice Robert Hall ruled CHL clubs must release their financial records in an attempt to determine if a minimum-wage pay structure is sustainable.

Charney Lawyers, which filed the suit, claims, "Major junior hockey is big business, generating revenues for the teams, while the devoted young hockey players who work their hearts out do not get paid. We want to change that."

But that's not the position on the other side of the table.

League counsel Norman Machida noted that the average CHL club loses $91,000 per year, adding that minimum-wage salaries would cost each team $300,000.

The next step in the case will be held in Toronto from March 21-23, with a scheduled motion for certification of the suit.

Stars to retire Lehtinen’s No. 26

Jere Lehtinen's name will hang among the greats.

The Dallas Stars announced Saturday that the club will retire the Finnish winger's No. 26 prior to a game next season.

The ceremony will be part of 25th anniversary celebrations for the Stars, who arrived in Texas when the Minnesota North Stars relocated in 1993.

Lehtinen played his entire career with Dallas, making his NHL debut in 1995 and appearing in his final game in 2010. He captured three Selke Trophies over his career and won the Stanley Cup in 1999.

Lehtinen joins four former players who starred with the franchise:

Number Players Career
7 Neal Broten North Stars (80-93) & Stars (93-97)
8 Bill Goldsworthy North Stars (67-77)
9 Mike Modano North Stars (88-93) & Stars (93-10)
19 Bill Masterton North Stars (67-68)

Report: Senators waive Hammond

This isn't how Andrew Hammond wanted to celebrate his birthday.

The Senators goaltender was placed on waivers Saturday, a move Ottawa made in response to starter Craig Anderson rejoining the team following a leave of absence to be with his ill wife.

In Anderson's absence, the Senators acquired Mike Condon from the Pittsburgh Penguins, who recently appeared in his 27th straight game.

Hammond has played in six contests with the Senators this season, going winless while recording an .837 save percentage and 4.08 goals-against average.

The 29-year-old was a hero in Ottawa during the 2014-15 season, when he posted a miraculous 20-1-2 record and pushed the Senators into the playoffs. That performance earned him a three-year contract, which expires at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

Squad Up Daily NHL Fantasy Dose: No cap on Ovechkin and Backstrom’s ceilings

Follow theScore's fantasy feed on Twitter (@theScoreFantasy) for the latest news, features and more. And download Squad Up, theScore's free-to-win-money sports game.

Here is a look at the Squad Up daily NHL fantasy picture for Saturday's slate beginning at 7 p.m. EST (all advanced statistics courtesy of Corsica.Hockey and apply to 5v5 situations):

Dynamic Duos

  • C Nicklas Backstrom (50K) & LW Alex Ovechkin (70K), Capitals (vs. Ducks): There's no team hotter than the Washington Capitals right now. They are 18-2-1 since Dec. 31. They have scored at least four goals in 15 of those 18 wins. As expected, Backstrom and Ovechkin have done the heavy lifting. RW T.J. Oshie can also be added to complete the stack.
  • C Sidney Crosby (76K) & LW Chris Kunitz (37K), Penguins (at Coyotes): Arizona has the highest xGA60 (expected goals against per 60 minutes) and SCA60 (scoring chances against per 60 minutes) in the NHL. Kunitz has excelled upon his reunion with Crosby, recording three goals and three assists in his last six games.
  • LW Alexander Steen (46K) & RW Vladimir Tarasenko (71K), Blues (at Canadiens): The Blues (17-9-4 at home) are 4-1 since Mike Yeo took over behind the bench. The Habs (13-11-4 on the road) just snapped a four-game losing streak, but had to take Arizona to OT to do so. One of Yeo's adjustments was putting Tarasenko with Steen and Paul Stastny. It has paid off, as the sniper has four goals in five games.

Goalie Breakdown

  • TARGET - Henrik Lundqvist (88K), Rangers (vs. Avalanche): Lundqvist has bounced back from a rough stretch, going 7-1 in his last nine games played, posting a .938 SV%. The Avs generate fewer scoring chances than any team in the NHL. King Henrik is the safest play of any goalie.
  • BARGAIN - Jake Allen (75K), Blues (at Canadiens): As mentioned, the Blues have excelled since Ken Hitchcock was fired. Allen has been a big reason why. He is 3-1 with a .958 SV% since Yeo took over. Prior to their 5-4 OT win against Arizona, the Habs had scored just three goals in four games.
  • FADE - John Gibson (75K), Ducks (at Capitals): Gibson has been great this season, so it's awfully tempting to draft him considering his minimum salary, but with a matchup against the red-hot capitals, consider him forbidden fruit.
  • CONTRARIAN - Cam Talbot (96K), Oilers (vs. Blackhawks): Talbot's ownership will be low with a matchup against the Blackhawks, especially with a high salary. However, the Oilers, fresh off their bye week, haven't played since Sunday. Chicago played in Winnipeg last night and could come out sluggish.

Bargain Plays

  • D Nikita Zaitsev (25K), Maple Leafs (vs. Sabres): Zaitsev has three points in his last three games and a very respectable 24 on the season for a rookie defenseman. He also has 72 shots, 117 hits and 91 blocks - great for Squad Up's scoring system. He quarterback's Toronto's third-ranked power-play unit and Buffalo has the league's worst penalty kill.
  • LW Marcus Foligno (25K), Sabres (at Maple Leafs): Frederik Andersen is going through a bit of a rough patch lately, but it's not all his fault. The Leafs have the second worst xGA60 and allow the third most SCA60. Foligno (6-foot-3, 228 pounds), Jack Eichel and Evander Kane all stand at least 6-foot-2 and could take advantage of an undersized Leafs d-core.
  • C Jake Guentzel (25K), Penguins (at Coyotes): Guentzel has taken just 18 shots in 16 games, but he has somehow recorded nine points. He has played more minutes lately with all of Pittsburgh's injuries up front and can return value based on hits (40) alone.

Top Fades

  • LW Milan Lucic (48K), Oilers (vs. Blackhawks): Lucic no longer plays on a line with Connor McDavid and his numbers are hurting because of it. He has just one goal and three assists in his last 17 games and playing less than 16 minutes per night.
  • C Ryan Getzlaf (67K), Ducks (at Capitals): Getzlaf doesn't take enough shots to warrant a 67K salary. Both his floor and his ceiling are capped against Washington.
  • D Andrei Markov (34K), Canadiens (vs. Blues): Markov had to return to Russia for a personal emergency. It doesn't appear as though he will make it back in time for Saturday's game.

Contrarian Options

  • C William Nylander (52K), Maple Leafs (vs. Sabres): Auston Matthews, Nazem Kadri and Mitch Marner have all been more effective in Squad Up's scoring system this year. If someone is keen on drafting a Leafs center, it certainly won't be Nylander. However, Nylander leads Toronto with 16 power-play points and Buffalo has the league's worst PK.
  • LW Gabriel Landeskog (53K), Avalanche (at Rangers): Landeskog is having a miserable season and has a tough matchup, but he does have four points in his last three games and took eight shots on Thursday against Pittsburgh.
