Lightning’s Boyle: ‘I’d love to play against us right now’

Brian Boyle wasn't mincing words following the Tampa Bay Lightning's third loss in a row.

"I'd love to play against us right now in our own end - it's easy," the veteran center said Tuesday, per Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. "We've relied on our goalies, they've been phenomenal. They're great teammates because they haven't ripped into us yet for how we're treating them, for how we're defending."

The Lightning have dropped four of five games to end their November schedule, with the past three coming in rather lopsided decisions:

  • Nov. 25 vs. Columbus: 5-3
  • Nov. 27 @ Boston: 4-1
  • Nov. 29 @ Columbus: 5-1

On top of that, Tampa Bay was outshot by a 106-86 margin in those three games, making things more difficult for goalies Ben Bishop and Andrei Vasilevskiy.

In light of the recent skid, the Lightning sit third in the Atlantic Division, two points ahead of the Bruins and three points ahead of Toronto, Florida, and Detroit.

Things won't get any easier, with St. Louis and Washington up next. As Boyle sees it, the loss of Steven Stamkos to injury is no excuse.

"We need to get the job done," he said, "or things are going to change."

Watch: Andrew Shaw ejected after penalty box meltdown

Andrew Shaw certainly didn't agree with the call.

The Montreal Canadiens grinder took a hooking penalty late Tuesday against the Anaheim Ducks and wasn't very pleased about the perceived infraction, shattering his stick before some choice words with the officials.

Unsurprisingly, he was ejected for his actions. He didn't agree with that either.

The poor stick rack didn't even see it coming.

Tuesday a true showcase of the NHL’s young talent

Anybody out there still sour over Team North America not making it to the final of the World Cup of Hockey?

Well, Tuesday may have helped ease any lingering disappointment as the game's young stars - many of whom comprised the 23-and-under squad at this September's World Cup - were out making magic with their NHL clubs.

With 12 games on the slate it might have been difficult to catch what all the youngsters were up to. This is their league now and they were out proving it. So here is what the NHL's elite youth were up to on a busy schedule:

  • In Edmonton, fans were treated to the second - and unfortunately final - installment of the Auston Matthews/Connor McDavid saga. The two did not disappoint, creating endless chances and each scoring a highlight reel goal. Matthews got things started, finishing off a great feed from William Nylander, with McDavid - despite his team losing the contest - eventually stealing the show.

  • Back in Ottawa, Jack Eichel made his presence felt in his first game back from injury with a goal and an assist, providing a huge sigh of relief for the Buffalo Sabres faithful.

  • A little further South, the New York Rangers continued to roll thanks in part to a late game-winning tally from former Hobey Baker Award-winner Jimmy Vesey.
  • And not to be outshone by the crop ahead, Max Domi netted his fourth of the season against the San Jose Sharks, giving him 15 points on the season.

The game is clearly in good hands, just one question: Feeling old yet?

Johansen continues to sizzle, nets showstopper vs. Avalanche

Ryan Johansen appears to be over whatever was causing his slump to start the year.

After posting just six points through the Nashville Predators' first 13 games of the season, the 24-year-old is tearing up the league, with seven points in his last four games.

Of course, none have been as pretty as his marvelous goal against the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday night.

Johansen now has 16 points in 22 games this season, giving him a share of top spot on the Predators.

Watch: McDavid finally scores vs. Maple Leafs in dazzling fashion

You can only hold off Connor McDavid for so long.

After keeping the league's leading scorer goalless for over 100 minutes this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs finally conceded a goal to McDavid, who turned on the jets before beating Frederik Andersen with an in-close snipe.

With an assist earlier in the contest McDavid now has 31 points on the season, becoming the first player to reach the 30-point plateau.

Senators’ Ryan out indefinitely with hand injury

The Ottawa Senators will be without Bobby Ryan for the foreseeable future after he left Tuesday's game versus the Buffalo Sabres with a hand injury, the team announced.

Senators coach Guy Boucher confirmed that Ryan is out indefinitely, telling TSN's Brent Wallace that Ryan "won't play the next game for sure."

Ryan missed two games earlier this month with a finger injury and aggravated the ailment on Tuesday night.

The veteran forward has struggled this season, posting eight points through 21 games.

Watch: Laine snaps 6-game goalless skid with wicked wrister

Breaking news, Patrik Laine can still score.

The Winnipeg Jets forward got the monkey off his back after a six-game goalless skid Tuesday night, wiring a wrist shot over the blocking glove of New Jersey Devils goaltender Cory Schneider early into in the third period.

The goal - Laine's 13th of the season - gives the rookie a share of second place in the league alongside Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak and teammate Mark Scheifele.

Watch: Hoffman scores first NHL hat trick in loss to Sabres

Mike Hoffman found his scoring touch, but it wasn't enough as his Ottawa Senators fell to the Buffalo Sabres 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Coming into the game, Hoffman had tallied just four times on the season after averaging 28 goals in each of the last two seasons.

But the Senators forward has had the hot stick since missing a pair of games in mid-November, tallying five points in his last four games. He also picked up an assist Tuesday, bringing his total to nine points in his last five contests.
