Report: Mexico City officials in talks to host 2 NHL preseason games

The NHL may be heading further south as Mexico City sports and government officials are looking to host a pair of NHL games next preseason, Mexican news agency NOTIMEX reports.

Mexican Ice Hockey Federation president Joaquin de la Garma has reportedly met with the NHL twice to discuss the proposal. The games would "most likely" be played at Mexico City arena, Palacio de los Deportes, where an ice rink would need to be installed.

De la Garma said "it would be the NHL who decides which teams would play," but added the most popular teams in the country are the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, and Pittsburgh Penguins.

His hope is to have one game on a Friday night and another on a Sunday at noon.

Senators sign Macoy Erkamps to 3-year, entry-level contract

The Ottawa Senators signed free-agent defenseman Macoy Erkamps of the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings to a three-year, entry-level contract, the team announced Friday.

"We are happy to have Macoy join the Senators organization," said general manager Bryan Murray. "He is a player we've had an eye on over the course of his junior career and we've watched him develop into one of the WHL's top defensemen this season. He's a talented, competitive guy whose game took a big jump this season."

Erkamps, who is serving as captain of the Wheat Kings, led all WHL defensemen with 58 assists this season and ranked second among blue-liners with 71 points, trailing only teammate Ivan Provorov - a Philadelphia Flyers first-round pick.

The 21-year-old was an invitee to the Senators' summer development camp in 2013, and attended the St. Louis Blues' Rookie Camp as a free agent last September.

Predators GM hopes Wilson uses scratch as ‘wake-up call’

After a breakout 20-goal campaign earned Colin Wilson a four-year, $15.75-million contract in the offseason, the Nashville Predators forward was hoping to build on his success with "more consistency," but the season hasn't gone the way he or his team hoped.

With just five goals and 17 assists through 60 games, the 26-year-old was made a healthy scratch for the first time this season after Thursday's loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and general manager David Poile is hoping it will help him raise his level of play.

"He's had an off season," Poile said, according to Adam Vingan of The Tennessean. "We can't get around it. ... We're in a results-oriented business, and (Wilson) just hasn't been the same player. Hopefully, this is a wake-up call for him. He's got to find a way to play better. We all know that he can do it.

"He hasn't been anywhere near as dynamic as he was last year. He had that confidence with the puck, taking the puck to the net, shooting the puck, scoring goals. ... He's just not the same player."

Head coach Peter Laviolette called the scratch a tough decision, but stated he wanted his "best 12 forwards" on the ice. But after the loss to the Penguins prevented the Predators from clinching a playoff spot, Wilson may find himself back in the lineup sooner rather than later.

Keith declines in-person hearing, will address Coyle incident Friday

Duncan Keith will plead his case Friday, and over the phone.

The Chicago Blackhawks defenseman declined his offered in-person hearing, choosing not to travel to the NHL offices to speak to the NHL's Department of Player Safety and address his high stick to the face of Minnesota Wild forward Charlie Coyle.

Keith, whose been suspended twice earlier in his career, can be banned in excess of six games for the ugly stick-swinging incident.

He earned a match penalty and game misconduct for the transgression, and will likely not be eligible until some point in the postseason.
