Hurricanes’ Twitter feed bombarded after blowing 4-1 lead to Jets

Blowing a 4-1 lead in the third period is not how you want to start the season. Ask the Carolina Hurricanes.

Bill Peters' squad was cruising over the Winnipeg Jets with 14:58 to play Thursday. That's when it all fell apart. Blake Wheeler scored nine seconds after Victor Rask put Carolina up 4-1, Patrik Laine potted his first career goal, Mathieu Perreault tied the game up with 90 seconds left, and Mark Scheifele won it in overtime.

Hurricanes fans, they weren't happy. That's about the last way you want to watch your team start the season. Unfortunately for Carolina's social media team, the show must go on, and the game story must be tweeted, even after a ghastly collapse. Here are the best tweets sent the Hurricanes' way after a nightmare first game:

It could have been worse, Hurricanes fans. It could have happened in Game 7 of the playoffs.

Here is a look at the Squad Up daily NHL fantasy picture for Friday, October 14:

Triple Threats

  • LW Filip Forsberg (59K), C Ryan Johansen (57K), D P.K. Subban (47K), Predators (vs. Blackhawks): The Predators offense is crazy good. A year after finishing T12 in team goals, they've done little else other than upgrade their defense with the acquisition of Subban. The Blackhawks lost their season opener and now take to the road.
  • LW Johnny Gaudreau (61K), C Sean Monahan (50K), D Mark Giordano (35K), Flames (vs. Oilers): A more contrarian stack, the Flames and Oilers will play a rematch of the Oilers' 7-4 season-opening victory Wednesday. Gaudreau and Monahan are as safe as it gets and Giordano is under priced with first-unit power-play time.
  • C Claude Giroux (69K), RW Wayne Simmonds (59K), D Shayne Gostisbehere (48K), Flyers (at Kings): The Flyers get first crack at a Kings team without G Jonathan Quick. Simmonds replaces RW Jakub Voracek on the right side of Giroux at 5v5, though Voracek rejoins his center on the power play. Gostisbehere plays on the top unit at 5v5 and 5v4.

Bargain Plays

  • LW Milan Lucic, Oilers (at Flames): Lucic is an excellent way to gain exposure to Oilers C Connor McDavid in the early part of the season. He failed to record a point in Wednesday's high-scoring affair, but he did take a five-minute fighting major and tallied two shots on goal. He played 18:48, which is more than enough time to factor into plenty of offense.
  • C Mike Fisher (34K), Predators (vs. Blackhawks): Typically the Predators' third-line center in years past, the team's new captain will begin 2016-17 in a second-line role. While he isn't an offensive star on his own, he will play alongside RW James Neal at both even strength and on the power play. It's cheap exposure to a more dynamic player.
  • RW Craig Smith (39K), Predators (vs. Blackhawks): The trend of stacking the Predators and getting as much exposure as possible continues. Smith's point totals have dropped in each of the past two seasons, but he is the star of the team's third line at 5v5, while joining Forsberg and Johansen on the top power-play unit.

Top Fades

  • G Corey Crawford (95K), Blackhawks (at Predators): Crawford allowed three goals on 32 shots in Wednesday's opener against the St. Louis Blues. He was significantly worse on the road than he was at home last season, posting a .905 save percentage and a 2.99 goals against average, compared to rates of .940 and 1.85 in Chicago.
  • C Anze Kopitar (57K), Kings (vs. Flyers): Kopitar tallied an assist in Wednesday's opener, but he failed to record a single shot on goal. With Kings LW Tanner Pearson suspended for one more game, Kopitar is expected to be flanked by Ws Dwight King and Tyler Toffoli, as the team's injuries have reshaped the entire offense. He can't be used in cash games.
  • D Dennis Wideman (78K), Flames (vs. Oilers): Wideman scored a power-play goal Wednesday, inflating his projections for the second game of the season. He is stuck on the third pairing at 5v5 and he plays only on the second power-play unit. He doesn't have the safety or upside of many lower-priced defensemen.

Contrarian Options

  • D Roman Josi (45K), Predators (vs. Blackhawks): Josi perfectly represents the tournament strategy of pivoting. He is priced very similar to the higher-profile Subban, but they're defense partners at both 5v5 and on the top power play. The two are of equal offensive talent. With Josi likely to come with much lower ownership, he becomes the play.
  • RW Jordan Eberle (58K), Oilers (at Flames): Eberle scored a goal on three shots Wednesday, logging 19:21 of ice time. He benefits from playing alongside McDavid and Lucic, but he can't be expected to be the leading goal scorer among the trio. He has tallied 200 SOG in a season just once, coming in a 28-goal 2013-14 campaign. He will have assist opportunities.
  • C Sam Bennett (39K), Flames (vs. Oilers): Bennett offers a pivot off the highly-owned top line of the Flames. The second line doesn't have the same appeal as the trio including Monahan and Gaudreau, but Bennett played nearly 15 minutes in the first game of the year, registering three SOG. He likely won't have to face the Oilers' top line and he plays on the second power play.

Watch: Bruins’ Marchand caps off 5-point outing with dazzling goal

It appears Brad Marchand is still riding his World Cup of Hockey high.

The Boston Bruins forward helped propel his club to a 6-3 win in the team's season opener Thursday against the Columbus Blue Jackets by netting two goals and adding three assists. While the five-point outburst was impressive enough, it was his second goal of the game late in the third period that truly stole the show.

After all was said and done, the line of Marchand, David Pastrnak, and David Backes combined for all six goals and 12 points in the contest. Not bad, considering the team's top-center Patrice Bergeron was absent due to injury.

The outing gives Marchand the very early league lead in points.

Yakupov: Goal was 1st scored on a slapshot

Nail Yakupov might have a new trick up his sleeve.

The newest member of the St. Louis Blues scored his first goal with the team on Thursday, drilling a slap shot past Minnesota Wild netminder Devan Dubnyk, a rare feat by the 23-year-old.

"This is first time I score goal from slap shot," Yakupov said, according to NHL.com's Lou Korac. "I tried and you have to try to do something. Nothing wrong with shot, as coach said between periods to have shot-first mentality."

Nothing wrong with that at all. So going forward don't be surprised to see Yakupov take a few more windups.

Top 5 goals from Night No. 2 in the NHL

It was, in consecutive days, a high-volume scoring night in the NHL. But after Auston Matthews monopolized the lamp lighting Wednesday night, quite a few were able to get in on the fun on Night No. 2.

To celebrate another 24 hours free of discussion about ways to introduce more goal-scoring in the NHL, we introduce the top five goals from Thursday night's action.

5. Drouin big things

Jonathan Drouin might go from four to 40 this year. Watch the comeback sniper of the year favorite lull the defense to sleep before quickly picking up his feet, turning, and letting a perfect snap shot kiss the bar over Petr Mrazek's shoulder for his first of the season.

4. Oil change

Discarded former first-round picks of the Edmonton Oilers are hitting the right notes in St. Louis. Here's Nail Yakupov landing a pinpoint cross-ice feed in transition onto the stick of Magnus Paajarvi, who finds a hole in Devan Dubnyk.

3. Mad Matheson

Three-on-three overtime is all skill? Tell that to Michael Matheson. The defender stuck around on the forecheck while the Panthers changed personnel and dropped an unsuspecting Damon Severson. Emerging with the puck, Matheson spotted Aleksander Barkov with a cross-crease feed for the winner.

2. Receiving Ranger

This one's a little unconventional. Literally catching a chin-eye slap pass from across two lines from rookie Pavel Buchnevich in stride, Chris Kreider turns on the jets to beat Jaroslav Halak with a backhand deke.

1. Jets sweep

Winning a jump puck at center with Justin Faulk, Blake Wheeler leads Mark Scheifele into the zone two-on-one, finding his center with a touch feed for the finish, and to complete Winnipeg's comeback over Carolina.

Andrew Shaw slewfoots Johan Larsson as Canadiens-Sabres game ends

Andrew Shaw just can't stay out of trouble.

The Montreal Canadiens pest caught Buffalo Sabres forward Johan Larsson with a slewfoot in the final seconds of Thursday night's season opener.

Shaw was given a match penalty for the late incident.

Last month, he was suspended three preseason games for his hit on Washington Capitals prospect Connor Hobbs.

Watch: Laine displays scoring touch in 1st NHL game

Patrik Laine, too, is in with a successful NHL debut.

The No. 2 overall draft pick with the Winnipeg Jets provided a taste of his goal-scoring prowess in his first NHL start, caressing a pass in the offensive zone and hesitating just enough to open a shooting lane before slinging his first goal past Carolina Hurricanes netminder Cam Ward.

After cutting the lead to one, Laine helped the Jets salvage a point with an assist on Mathieu Perreault's game-tying goal with less than a minute-and-a-half to go.

Price won’t join Canadiens for Saturday’s game

Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price won't travel with the club for Saturday's game against the Ottawa Senators, the Canadiens confirmed Thursday night.

Price missed Thursday's season opener - a win over the Buffalo Sabres - due to illness.

Al Montoya stopped 30-of-31 shots for Montreal in the 4-1 victory.

Price played only 12 games last season due to injury.

The winner of the 2015 Hart and Vezina trophies led Canada to the World Cup of Hockey title last month.
