Rowe reminds Panthers it’s the NHL: ‘You can’t show up when you feel like it’

The Florida Panthers need more jump in their game.

That was the message from Tom Rowe, the Panthers' general manager and interim head coach, following Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild.

"It's a bad loss. We didn't generate enough scoring changes," Rowe told reporters. "We outshot them, I get it, but the shots were from the outside and we didn't have enough guys going to the net. It's a part of the game we're going to have to continually work on."

The Panthers outshot the Wild 30-22, but were only able to slip one by Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk, beating him with 4:24 left to play.

"Guys are going to understand that if you're going to play in the NHL, then you need to show up every single day," Rowe added. "You can't show up when you feel like it."

Since replacing Gerald Gallant behind the bench, Rowe has posted a record of 2-2-3, grabbing five points in seven games. With 30 points in as many games, Florida sits fifth place in the Atlantic, four points shy of a playoff position.

Squad Up Daily NHL Fantasy Dose: Well-rested Sens will feast on tired Sharks

Follow theScore's fantasy feed on Twitter (@theScoreFantasy) for the latest news, features and more. And download Squad Up, theScore's free-to-win-money sports game.

Here is a look at the Squad Up daily NHL fantasy picture for Wednesday, Dec. 14 (all advanced stats are at 5v5 and courtesy of Corsica.Hockey):

Triple Threat

  • LW Mike Hoffman (56K), RW Mark Stone (59K), D Erik Karlsson (55K), Senators (vs. Sharks): Hoffman, Stone and Karlsson are the Senators' top-three points leaders. The trio could have themselves a big night considering San Jose, the NHL's oldest team, will be playing in their second game in as many nights after defeating Toronto in a shootout Tuesday.
  • C Claude Giroux (64K), RW Jakub Voracek (68K), D Shayne Gostisbehere (42K), Flyers (at Avalanche): The Flyers are averaging 3.5 goals per game during their current nine-game winning streak. Colorado has no D pairing capable of stopping Giroux and Voracek. Both Gs Semyon Varlamov and Calvin Pickard have been shaky.
  • C Sidney Crosby (64K), LW Conor Sheary (29K), RW Patric Hornqvist (51K), Penguins (vs. Bruins): Crosby has a reduced salary with his matchup against the Bruins, as they have the lowest xGA60 (expected goals against per 60 minutes) in the NHL. Yet, at the rate Crosby is going, it doesn't seem anyone can stop him. He has 21 goals in 23 games, totaling 13 points in his last eight contests.

Bargain Plays

  • G Steve Mason (75K), Flyers (at Avalanche): Colorado generates the fewest SCF60 (scoring chances for per 60 minutes) and has the league's lowest xGF60 (expected goals for per 60 minutes). Mason is 7-0 with a .930 SV% during Philadelphia's nine-game winning streak.
  • D Ivan Provorov (25K), Flyers (at Avalanche): If you're not spending up on a D like Brent Burns or Karlsson, you might as well go with the minimum-priced Provorov. He has five points in his last six games and will record an abundance of shots, hits and blocks.
  • LW Conor Sheary (29K), Penguins (vs. Bruins): Sheary has enough intelligence, quickness and skill to succeed alongside Crosby. He has 16 points and 51 shots in 22 games on the year.

Top Fades

  • RW Bobby Ryan (48K), Senators (vs. Sharks): Ryan has all the skill in the world, but at 29 years old, he is no spring chicken anymore in today's youthful NHL and can't get by on skill alone. His lack of effort has showed up at times this season, resulting in just over 15 minutes of ice time per game and only three goals in 24 games.
  • LW Patrick Marleau (45K), Sharks (at Senators): Marleau is on the serious decline. He has just 10 points on the year, which puts him on pace for his worst season since he was an 18-year-old kid. It's hard to trust him on the second night of a back-to-back, especially since Tuesday's game went into overtime.
  • D Dougie Hamilton (46K), Flames (vs. Lightning): Hamilton is a really good defenseman and is having a fine season, but 46K seems like a lot when Karlsson is only slightly more expensive and Kris Letang is cheaper.

Contrarian Options

  • G Tuukka Rask (84K), Bruins (at Penguins): Rask will likely be faded in a matchup with the high-flying Penguins, but he is strongly in the running for the Vezina Trophy. He has a .943 SV% and a 1.59 GAA while playing on the road this season. At 84K, he is worth the risk in tournament lineups.
  • C Evgeni Malkin (61K), Penguins (vs. Bruins): On the other end of the spectrum, Malkin will also likely be faded because of how good Rask has been this season. Furthermore, he has been overshadowed by Crosby's play this year, which is not unlike his entire career. Malkin quietly has 14 points in his last eight games.
  • LW Gabriel Landeskog (46K), Avalanche (vs. Flyers): Landeskog has failed to record a point in two games since returning from injury. However, his willingness to throw hits and block shots provides a higher ceiling than most players at his salary if he is able to record a point or two.

3 NHL stars on a mission this season

"Do or do not. There is no try."

Motivation is a powerful tool, and it's one players and coaches use to their advantage whenever possible.

Players often practice self-motivation, and their inspiration can range from real, difficult circumstances to perceived slights and manufactured rivalries.

Here are three NHL stars on a mission in 2016-17:

Patrik Laine

Laine had a built-in narrative leading up to June's draft, when Auston Matthews was considered the consensus choice to be selected first overall.

The Finnish sensation insisted he, not Matthews should be chosen first, but the American star was taken by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the top pick, dropping Laine into the collective lap of the Winnipeg Jets.

Since then, much has been written about the Laine-Matthews debate and supposed rivalry.

Laine's case gained some steam when he capped off a hat trick with the overtime winner in his first meeting with Matthews and the Leafs in October.

He ranks third in the NHL and leads all rookies with 17 goals, leads the rookie class with 25 points, and tops all rookie forwards in average time on ice. Matthews has a respectable 13 goals and 22 points in 28 games after authoring a historic four-goal debut.

Both players will undoubtedly be great for years to come, but Laine's production at a younger age shows he's fully embraced playing with a proverbial chip on his shoulder, even if he still has some learning to do.

Shea Weber

Weber came into the season with plenty to prove after many considered him the inferior end of the summer's most stunning transaction when it was consummated between the Montreal Canadiens and the Nashville Predators.

He's played like a man on a mission early on, ranking in the top ten in the league in points among defensemen while logging his customary hefty workload of more than 25 minutes per game.

Weber may not be the better player in the long run (or have the more favorable contract), but he's been far from disappointing as he continues to adjust to his new role on the Canadiens' blue line.

The 31-year-old is currently mired in a seven-game pointless streak, but he's being relied upon heavily on Montreal's back end and has proven he's up to the challenge so far.

P.K. Subban

The other player involved in of the blockbuster trade has plenty of motivation in his own right.

Subban put up with plenty of unfounded criticism of his game and character before and after the trade that shipped him from Montreal to Nashville.

The 2013 Norris Trophy winner's production has never been questioned, but he's no doubt playing with something to prove as he continues to make an impression down south.

Subban has one fewer point than Weber with a game in hand, and he trails him in average ice time by less than 45 seconds.

More importantly, he appears to be having fun again, even while he sets out to prove Montreal's management made a mistake.

Blue Jackets beat Oilers for 7th straight victory

EDMONTON, Alberta - Sam Gagner had a goal and an assist, and the streaking Columbus Blue Jackets won their seventh straight game by beating the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Cam Atkinson and Matt Calvert also scored to help the Blue Jackets (18-5-4) improve to 8-0-1 in their last nine games.

Tyler Pitlick had the goal for the Oilers (15-12-5), who have lost five of six.

Edmonton got on the scoreboard first, just past the midpoint of the opening period as a hard-charging Pitlick got to a rebound in the blue paint and chipped it over Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.

The Oilers appeared to add another with 4 minutes left in the first, but officials determined forward Zack Kassian interfered with the goalie on the play.

Columbus tied the game on a power play 8 minutes into the second period when Gagner came back to hurt his old team. The puck went off the toe of his skate and past Edmonton goalie Cam Talbot for Gagner's fourth goal in the last four games and 12th of the season.

The Blue Jackets made it 2-1 at 7:10 of the third as a pass deflected to Atkinson and he hammered his 11th of the season past Talbot.

Columbus added to its lead 1:36 later when Calvert took advantage of a sloppy Oilers line change and rifled a shot off Talbot's arm and into the net.

The Blue Jackets completely took over in the third and were outshooting Edmonton 12-0 midway through the period.

NOTES: It was the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The other one is Jan. 3 in Columbus. ... Oilers D Brandon Davidson played his first game since injuring his shoulder in the season opener Oct. 12 against Calgary. It was good news for Edmonton, which announced that fellow defenseman Darnell Nurse could miss up to three months following ankle surgery. ... Columbus captain Nick Foligno returned to the lineup after missing two games with the flu.

Luongo destroys stick after allowing 5th goal

Roberto Luongo let his temper get the best of him Tuesday night.

The Florida Panthers goaltender smashed his stick on the boards at his team's bench after surrendering a fifth goal to the Minnesota Wild in an eventual 5-1 loss.

Luongo was pulled in favor of James Reimer after allowing Jason Zucker's goal midway through the third period, and the veteran netminder continued to vent his anger in the tunnel after being yanked.

Luongo and the Panthers are fortunate his outburst didn't injure any of his teammates.

Darling making a name for himself in Crawford’s absence

No Corey Crawford, no problem.

Since Chicago's two-time Stanley Cup champion starter hit the shelf with an appendectomy Dec. 3, Scott Darling has filled in more than admirably for the Central Division leading Blackhawks.

Darling is 7-2-2 this season, and in his last five starts, he's simply been lights out.

Opponent GA Sv% Decision
Rangers 1 0.971 W
Stars 1 0.958 W
Rangers 1 0.973 OTL
Coyotes 0 1.000 W
Jets 2 0.938 L

The recent run is a small sample size, but in 56 appearances over his NHL career, Darling is 28-14-6 with a 2.28 goals against average and .924 save percentage, making his pending unrestricted free agency all the more interesting.

While Crawford is due back before the month's end, if Darling remains in the zone, head coach Joel Quenneville might be hard pressed to take the crease away from the 27-year-old.

Following the win over the Rangers Tuesday, Darling was asked about his upcoming UFA status.

Darling owns a salary of $587,500, second-lowest among Blackhawks' regulars. However, he's playing his way into the conversation, and potentially a lucrative new contract.

Carter calls Kings ‘fragile’ after loss in Buffalo

Jeff Carter did his part.

The Los Angeles Kings center scored a pair of goals against the Sabres on Tuesday, but his team still skated off the ice in Buffalo with a 6-3 loss to its credit.

Carter clearly wasn't pleased with the result, as the Kings kicked off a nine-game road trip.

Los Angeles' home/away records this season certainly validate Carter's criticism.

Home Away
Games 15 13
Record 10-4-1 4-8-1

Tuesday's loss dropped the Kings to 14-12-2 on the season, good for 30 points and a rather unstable hold on a wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Things won't get much easier for Los Angeles, with upcoming dates in Detroit, Pittsburgh, Boston, Columbus, Nashville, Dallas, Vancouver, and Edmonton on the calendar, before the team returns home.

Islanders’ Capuano: ‘I’m losing my patience’ with lackluster offense

Jack Capuano wants more from his team.

The New York Islanders dropped a 4-2 decision Tuesday to the Washington Capitals, getting outshot 38-28 in the process.

It was the Islanders second loss in a row following a stretch where they earned a point in five consecutive games, but sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference, Capuano is growing tired of the same old results.

"I'm losing my patience with some guys," Capuano said following the loss, according to Jim Cerny from thehockeywriters.com. "We have to hold guys accountable."

"Where's the poise? Where's the confidence," Capuano added.

Capuano has a point. Several keys to the Islanders' offense simply aren't producing, as only six forwards have eclipsed the 10-point mark this season.

"It's frustrating," Capuano said, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple. "You know the talent's there. You don't know where it's gone."

As you might expect, captain John Tavares was exempt from the criticism:
