Hurricanes become 3rd NHL team to rally from 2 goals down in final 2 minutes to win in regulation

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jordan Staal and the Carolina Hurricanes put together one of the most improbable comebacks in NHL history on Thursday night.

With three late goals, the Hurricanes became the first team in more than 30 years and third overall to rally from two goals down in the final two minutes to win in regulation, beating the Utah Mammoth 5-4.

“It’s making memories,” Staal said. “I love being part of nights like this. You want more of them. You’re chasing those memories.”

The other teams to score three goals in the last two minutes to win were the Dallas Stars against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 14, 1995, and the Montreal Maroons against the New York Rangers on March 15, 1932.

Staal’s goal with 29.4 seconds left completed the comeback. Carolina's captain redirected the puck after it came off teammate Jordan Martinook’s stick.

“I don’t know you draw them up, but at the end of the day we found a way,” coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “Kind of a crazy last couple of minutes.”

With Carolina trailing 4-2, Andrei Svechnikov began the rally on a power play with 1:59 remaining and Hurricanes goalie Brandon Bussi on the bench. Shayne Gostisbehere, who missed the previous five games with an injury, notched his second goal of the night with 1:29 to go.

“I think that’s something to be said about this building, too,” Staal said. “I think the fans here are great. They’re always behind us. But when it gets going and gets fired up, you can tell guys feed off of that. … Momentum is a funny thing in this game (and) the fans pushed us to another level.”

Staal cut toward the crease to produce his 12th goal of the season. It was his second goal in the Canes' last 19 games.

“That’s how we should play all the time,” Svechnikov said. “A couple of bounces for us, obviously, but we (stuck) with the plan.”

Earlier Carolina mistakes resulted in goals for the Mammoth, but the Hurricanes finally found a response.

“Things don’t always go your way throughout games,” Staal said.

It was a stunning turnaround for Utah, too.

“We were exactly where we wanted to be,” Mammoth coach André Tourigny said. “Let it sting for now.”

There also was an NHL record registered by Bussi (20-3-1), a rookie who became the first goalie with 20 wins in his first 24 career games. Carolina stretched its points streak to six games.

Jordan Staal scores in final minute to cap late 3-goal rally by Hurricanes for 5-4 win over Mammoth

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jordan Staal's goal with 29.4 seconds left gave the Carolina Hurricanes three goals in the final two minutes for a 5-4 victory over the Utah Mammoth on Thursday night.

The Hurricanes became the first NHL team in more than 30 years and third overall to rally from two goals down in the last two minutes to win in regulation. The others were the Dallas Stars against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 14, 1995, and the Montreal Maroons against the New York Rangers on March 15, 1932.

Andrei Svechnikov and Shayne Gostisbehere each had two goals and an assist for the Hurricanes, who stretched their points streak to six games. Brandon Bussi stopped 21 shots to become the first NHL goalie with 20 wins in his first 24 games.

Utah’s Kailer Yamamoto scored two goals for the first time in more than two years and added an assist. JJ Peterka and Michael Carcone also scored for the Mammoth, who concluded a 2-2-0 trip in their last road game until March. Jack McBain had two assists and Karel Vejmelka made 27 saves.

Svechnikov scored on a power play with the goalie pulled with 1:59 left, giving him eight goals in a six-game stretch. Just 32 seconds later, Gostisbehere, who had missed the previous five games with an injury, got the Hurricanes even.

The Mammoth lost for the second time in eight games.

Peterka responded 19 seconds after Carolina’s second-period goal and the Mammoth led until the final minutes.

Svechnikov opened the scoring 3:04 into the game.

Yamamoto’s second goal of the trip, after getting scratched for four games, came 4:10 into the second. He gave the Mammoth the lead for the first time at 8:24 of the second by sending a rebound into an open net.

The Hurricanes converted on their third power-play opportunity of the second period when Gostisbehere blasted a shot from inside the blue line.

Vejmelka has lost two games in a row for the first time since Dec. 8-10.

Brandon Bussi makes 17 saves for his 18th win as the Hurricanes beat the Sabres 2-1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Brandon Bussi made 17 saves for his 18th win of the season, Seth Jarvis scored the go-ahead goal on a power play early in the third period and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 on Monday.

Andrei Svechnikov had a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes, who have won three straight and secured at least one point for the eighth time in their past nine games. Sebastian Aho assisted on both of Carolina's goals, giving him nine in five games.

Bussi improved to 18-3-1 and now has the most victories for a goaltender in his first 22 NHL starts. Six of his saves came on U.S. Olympian Tage Thompson, including a highlight-reel glove stop and another with two seconds remaining.

Rasmus Dahlin scored for the Sabres, who have lost back-to-back games for the first time since Dec. 5 and 8. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 26 of 28 shots as Buffalo began a five-game road trip.

The Hurricanes have a 13-game home winning streak against the Sabres, the league's longest active streak of its kind.

Dahlin scored 1:33 in, pushing his points streak to five games. Svechnikov’s fifth goal in three games tied the score later in the first period.

Jarvis’ team-leading 22nd goal came seven seconds into a power play and 2:10 into the third.

The Hurricanes played the final two periods without winger Eric Robinson, who left with an upper-body injury in the first.
