Sportsnet apologizes for Don Cherry’s ‘divisive’ and ‘offensive’ remarks

Sportsnet issued a statement on Sunday apologizing for Don Cherry's disparaging remarks during his most recent "Coach's Corner" segment on Hockey Night in Canada.

"Don's discriminatory comments are offensive and they do not represent our values and what we stand for as a network. We have spoken directly with Don about the severity of this issue and we sincerely apologize for these divisive remarks," read the statement from Bart Yabsley, president of Sportsnet.

With Remembrance Day approaching, Cherry ranted about people who immigrate to Canada apparently not purchasing enough poppies.

"You people that come here, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that," Cherry said.

"These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada."

Cherry, 85, has been an open supporter of the military throughout his career, and he's received plenty of online backlash over this outburst. It doesn't appear he'll face any additional discipline, and Cherry hasn't addressed the matter since the segment aired.

Maple Leafs surprise 11-year-old fan with birthday party

The Toronto Maple Leafs hosted a special guest at Saturday's morning skate, as 11-year-old fan Kade Foster was there for his birthday party.

Foster's story went viral earlier this week after his dad reached out on Twitter to the Maple Leafs for some birthday wishes when his son's friends didn't attend his party.

Many Maple Leafs players, including John Tavares, Mitch Marner, and Morgan Rielly, responded to wish Foster a happy birthday. The Maple Leafs captain then orchestrated a plan to bring the Newfoundland native to Toronto.

"His birthday was officially on Monday so I called him on Monday to wish him a happy birthday and we kind of organized a plan to bring him," Tavares told NHL.com's Dave McCarthy. "It was good to just call him and say 'happy birthday' and let him know what kind of surprise was coming. We wanted to try to do something to give him something to celebrate and be happy about."

Foster met the entire Maple Leafs roster and received tickets for Saturday's clash with the Philadelphia Flyers.

"It was awesome, I was so surprised, I couldn't believe it," Foster said.

Hedman returns to Lightning lineup vs. Sabres in Sweden

Victor Hedman returned to the Tampa Bay Lightning's lineup on home soil Friday after missing two games with a lower-body injury.

The Lightning are in Sweden for two games against the Buffalo Sabres as part of the NHL Global Series. Hedman, along with fellow Swedish defenseman Rasmus Dahlin of Buffalo, are two of the biggest draws for fans in their home country.

Hedman suffered the injury on Oct. 29, but head coach Jon Cooper was hopeful that the star blue-liner would be ready for the club's trip to Sweden.

In 11 games this season, Hedman has notched two goals and seven assists while logging 21:39 per contest.

Bruins-Predators, Avalanche-Blue Jackets make up 2020 NHL Global Series

The Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators will open their 2020-21 regular seasons in Prague, Czech Republic, and the Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets will travel to Helsinki, Finland to make up next year's NHL Global Series, the league announced on Friday.

The Bruins and Predators will also finish their training camps in Germany and Switzerland, respectively, with each team hosting an exhibition game before heading to Prague. Boston stars David Pastrank and David Krejci are from the Czech Republic, and Switzerland is the birthplace of Nashville captain Roman Josi.

Later in the fall, the Avs and Jackets will travel overseas to play two regular-season games. Finland is the home country for Colorado's Mikko Rantanen and Joonas Donskoi, as well as Columbus' Markus Nutivaara and Joonas Korpisalo. Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen was also born in Finland.

Next year's events will mark the fourth consecutive season the NHL has sent teams to Europe, and ninth overall. The Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers opened their seasons in Prague in October, and the Buffalo Sabres and Tampa Bay Lightning are currently in Stockholm, Sweden for a two-game set.

Jets’ Little suffered perforated eardrum, vertigo from slap shot to head

Winnipeg Jets forward Bryan Little suffered a perforated eardrum and is dealing with vertigo after taking a slap shot to the head in Tuesday's game versus the New Jersey Devils, head coach Paul Maurice announced.

Little is expected to make a full recovery, but a timeline is unknown to this point, Maurice added.

The injury occurred in the third period after an errant slap shot from teammate Nikolaj Ehlers struck Little as he was skating behind the net. He was taken to hospital and had the laceration closed with 25-to-30 stitches.

Little previously missed the first nine games of the season with a concussion.

The 31-year-old has been in the Jets/Thrashers organization for his entire 13-year career and had notched five points in seven games this season before the injury.

Maple Leafs place Petan, Marincin on waivers

The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed forward Nic Petan and defenseman Martin Marincin on waivers, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Petan has played only five games for the Maple Leafs this season and was recalled for a one-game stint earlier this week. It was reported in October that Toronto was looking to trade the 24-year-old forward.

Toronto acquired Petan from the Winnipeg Jets at last season's trade deadline. He's recorded a single assist in his NHL appearances in 2019-20.

Marincin has been a fill-in on the Leafs' blue line, suiting up for seven games this year without recording a point. The 27-year-old averaged 11:51 in ice time during those contests.

With Petan and Marincin on the waiver wire, the Maple Leafs still need to free up one more roster spot for the impending return of winger Zach Hyman, who could make his season debut this weekend. Dmytro Timashov, Jason Spezza, and Nick Shore are among the candidates to be pulled from the regular rotation, according to Sportsnet's Chris Johnston.

Oilers’ Klefbom calls loss to Cup champs ‘a lesson for us’

Despite an unexpectedly hot start to the season, the Edmonton Oilers weren't up to the task when measuring themselves against the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues on Wednesday.

St. Louis handed Edmonton a 5-2 home loss and claimed its sixth consecutive victory while maintaining its hold of first place in the Western Conference. The Blues' ability to close out the win was something the Oilers took note of afterward.

"This was a lesson for us," Edmonton defenseman Oscar Klefbom told The Canadian Press. "This was a playoff game and obviously we have a long way to go. We have to find a way to win these games because there are going to be many of them this year.

"We're going to play a lot of good teams and we have to be ready. They played last night, and we gave them a little bit too much and it cost us."

Despite the loss, Edmonton put together a strong showing versus the defending champs in a number of statistical categories, owning a 34-25 advantage in shots on goal while firing 54.74% of shot attempts and producing 56.52% of scoring chances at five-on-five, according to Natural Stat Trick.

The defeat was the Oilers' second in a row to kick off a three-game homestand that will conclude Friday versus the New Jersey Devils. Even with the loss, Edmonton sits first in the Pacific Division with 22 points through 17 contests.

Kings’ Toffoli on trade rumors: ‘Whatever happens, happens’

Los Angeles Kings forward Tyler Toffoli is subject to early-season trade chatter for a number of reasons, and being a healthy scratch last week has escalated matters.

Toffoli was left out of the lineup Oct. 30 versus the Vancouver Canucks after going pointless in eight consecutive games. The 27-year-old addressed the trade rumors on Monday.

"I mean, it's just the way it is," Toffoli said, according to Sportsnet's Luke Fox. "It comes with not playing well and not winning games, so whatever happens, happens.

"I was definitely disappointed (by the scratch), but at the end of the day it's not my decision. My job is to go out there and perform."

Toffoli has been a staple in the Kings' attack since 2014, and benching him was not an easy choice for new head coach Todd McLellan.

"You debate whether you're doing the right thing or the wrong thing, but the end game is what it's about when you're making a decision," McLellan said.

"Toff started the season really well. He fell off a little bit, and we didn't want to let it go."

In his first game back in the lineup on Nov. 2, Toffoli recorded two assists in a victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. The win was Los Angeles' third in its last 10 games.

Toffoli is an unrestricted free agent at season's end, and he carries a cap hit of $4.6 million. The retooling Kings might try to recoup some assets for the right-winger before the trade deadline.

Toffoli could be an attractive option for contending teams looking to add offensive depth. He's eclipsed 20 goals twice in his career and 30 once, and he won a Stanley Cup with Los Angeles in 2014.

Senators’ Sabourin stretchered off ice vs. Bruins

Ottawa Senators forward Scott Sabourin was stretchered off the ice just over three minutes into Saturday's contest against the Boston Bruins.

Sabourin collided with Boston forward David Backes and hit his head on the ice as he fell.

He was tended to for several minutes by medical staff and gave a thumbs-up as he was taken off the ice. No update has been provided yet.

Sabourin, 27, made his NHL debut this season after several years in the minors. He's chipped in two points for the Senators while averaging just under seven minutes of ice time per night.
