The Buffalo Sabres re-signed defenseman Brandon Montour to a one-year, $3.85-million contract, the team announced Saturday.

Montour, 26, recorded 18 points in 54 games this past season, his first full year in Buffalo after being acquired from the Anaheim Ducks in February 2019.

His eight goals scored since Montour's team debut tops all Sabres defensemen over that span.

The Sabres announced Wednesday that Montour was among six of their restricted free agents who had been tendered a qualifying offer, allowing the club to match any other offers for the blue-liner, or at least receive draft-pick compensation if he signed an offer sheet elsewhere.

The Ducks selected Montour in the second round (55th overall) in 2014. He's tallied 91 points over 243 games across four NHL seasons.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Andreas Johnsson to the New Jersey Devils for Joey Anderson, the team announced.

The Maple Leafs needed to clear cap space after signing TJ Brodie on Friday, and Johnsson was the odd man out. He's inked for three more years with an annual cap hit of $3.4 million, according to CapFriendly.

Johnsson, 25, racked up 20 goals and 23 assists in 2018-19, finishing eighth in Calder Trophy voting. He took a step back during an injury-riddled 2019-20 campaign, though, recording eight goals and 13 assists in 43 games.

Anderson, the Devils' third-round pick in 2016, has tallied 13 points in 52 career NHL games. The 22-year-old is currently a restricted free agent.

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed former New York Rangers winger Jesper Fast to a three-year deal carrying an annual cap hit of $2 million, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

Fast had spent all of his 422-game NHL career thus far in the Big Apple. The 28-year-old was on pace for a career-year offensively last season before the shutdown, tallying 12 goals and 29 points in 69 games.

The speedy winger will add a physical component to the Hurricanes' attack, as he's logged 99-plus hits in each of the last six seasons.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are nearing a one-year contract with veteran forward Mikko Koivu, according to theScore's John Matisz.

The deal is worth roughly $1.5 million, Matisz adds.

Koivu, 37, has spent his entire 15-year NHL career with the Minnesota Wild. Wild GM Bill Guerin said in September that the team wouldn't sign the longtime captain.

The 6-foot-3 pivot contributed four goals and 21 points in 55 games last season before the pause.

The Edmonton Oilers are nearing a one-year contract with defenseman Tyson Barrie, reports TSN's Darren Dreger.

The deal is worth just shy of $4 million, Dreger adds.

Barrie was dealt from the Colorado Avalanche to the Toronto Maple Leafs last offseason. He struggled under Mike Babcock, but was more productive when the club replaced the veteran coach with Sheldon Keefe, ultimately finishing with 39 points in 70 games.

It was a down year compared to some of his previous seasons, but despite the dip in points, Barrie turned down at least one offer of at least $6 million per season, according to TSN's Frank Seravalli.

Barrie should be able to mesh with Edmonton's high-octane offense, and perhaps quarterback the top power play with Oscar Klefbom potentially facing a lengthy injury absence.

Edmonton made a pair of signings when free agency opened Friday, bringing in Kyle Turris and keeping Tyler Ennis in the fold.

The Boston Bruins signed forward Craig Smith to a three-year deal worth $9.3 million, the team announced Saturday.

Smith, 31, has spent his entire nine-year career with the Nashville Predators since being selected by the club in the 2009 NHL Draft.

The 6-foot-1 winger can play up and down the Bruins' lineup and adds a needed element of depth scoring to the team.

Smith was on pace to hit the 20-goal mark for the sixth time over his previous seven full campaigns before the pause, finishing with 18 goals and 31 points through 69 games with the Predators last season.

The Colorado Avalanche signed restricted free agent forward Andre Burakovsky to a two-year contract carrying an average annual value of $4.9 million, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

Burakovsky was traded to the Avs from the Washington Capitals last summer. He had a career season in his debut campaign in Colorado, registering 20 goals and 25 assists in 58 games before the pause.

He also chipped in 17 points in 15 playoff games before his club was eliminated in the second round by the Dallas Stars.

The 25-year-old winger made $3.25 million on a one-year deal in 2019-20, and his new contract will walk him into unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career.

The Avalanche still have plenty of work to do with their RFAs, as Valeri Nichushkin, Tyson Jost, Vladislav Kamenev, Ryan Graves, and Nikita Zadorov need new contracts. General manager Joe Sakic shouldn't have much of an issue fitting them all in under the books, as he has a projected $17.4 million in cap space, according to Cap Friendly.
