Report: Blackhawks have ‘serious interest’ in Canucks’ Hamhuis, Vrbata

The Vancouver Canucks could significantly help the Chicago Blackhawks in their quest to repeat as Stanley Cup champions.

The Blackhawks have serious interest in Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis and forward Radim Vrbata, reports TSN's Farhan Lalji.

Hamhuis has a full no-trade clause, and neither he nor his team has revealed whether he'll waive it. The Canucks were reportedly expected to finalize their pre-trade deadline plans at scouting meetings last weekend.

The 33-year-old blue-liner is a pending unrestricted free agent with a cap hit of $4.5 million, and Vrbata is also a pending UFA carrying a hit of $5 million.

The Blackhawks are expected to have around $4.75 million in cap space on deadline day, according to General Fanager.

TSN's Bob McKenzie reported last week the Blackhawks were "very aggressively" looking to add a top-line winger.

Canadiens’ Petry out for rest of regular season, Gilbert to miss 6 months

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry will miss the rest of the regular season following surgery for a sports hernia, while Tom Gilbert will require six months to recover from knee surgery.

Gilbert had knee surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews in Florida on Wednesday, while Petry hasn't undergone his procedure yet.

The Canadiens ruled Gilbert out for the season on Monday, but the new timetable puts training camp in jeopardy for the pending unrestricted free agent.

Petry, who hasn't played since Feb. 7, posted an even-strength Corsi For percentage of 54.6 and 16 points in 51 games.

Gilbert managed only two points and a 5-on-5 Corsi For percentage of 49 in 45 contests.

VIDEO: Maple Leafs prospect Nylander shows off Zlatan-esque soccer skills

Is there anything William Nylander can't do?

The Toronto Maple Leafs prospect channeled his inner Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the Toronto Marlies' practice facility Thursday morning, doing his countryman proud by booting one over the ice surface.

Nylander ranks 11th in AHL scoring with 43 points in 35 games, despite missing time with a concussion earlier this season,

If his hockey career doesn't work out, Toronto FC should give him a shot.

Report: Panthers ‘cooling’ on Ladd as Jets seek 1st-rounder, top prospect

The Florida Panthers could use a boost up front, but the price to land one of the biggest potential trade-deadline commodities may be too steep.

The Panthers are "cooling" in their pursuit of Winnipeg Jets forward Andrew Ladd because the Jets are seeking a first-round draft pick and a top prospect in return, according to George Richards of The Miami Herald.

Ladd's a pending unrestricted free agent who carries a cap hit of $4.4 million. The Jets captain has improved his trade value lately, scoring four goals over the past three games.

The 30-year-old would likely be a rental player, because barring a contract extension, he'll be a free agent at season's end.

Ladd has 17 goals and 17 assists in 59 games.

Panthers sign Shawn Thornton to 1-year extension

The Florida Panthers have signed Shawn Thornton to a one-year contract extension.

“We are pleased to have Shawn return for another season,” Panthers chairman Vinnie Viola wrote in a release Thursday.

“Shawn is the embodiment of the selfless, team-first culture we are trying to create on and off the ice with the Florida Panthers and has made himself an important part of the South Florida community. We look forward to having this man of character as a leader within our organization for many years to come.”

The 38-year-old winger was a pending unrestricted free agent with a cap hit of $1.2 million in 2015-16.

Thornton has three points and 50 penalty minutes in his second campaign with the Panthers after spending seven seasons with the Boston Bruins.

"Shawn is a highly respected and hardworking member of our hockey club, both on and off the ice,” Panthers general manager Dale Tallon said. “His experience and leadership have made a positive impact on our locker room and on our young players as they continue their development.”

Thornton spent his first three NHL seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks and one more with the Anaheim Ducks before joining the Bruins.
