Charlotte Checkers Win Game 2 In Overtime, Even Up Calder Cup Finals

The Charlotte Checkers have tied the Calder Cup Finals 1-1 after an overtime winner from defenseman Mike Benning in Game 2.

The Abbotsford Canucks took Game 1 in double overtime after a bizarre disallowed own goal that kept them in the game.

John Leonard continued his fantastic play by opening the scoring, his team leading seventh goal and 11th point of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

Sammy Blais was everywhere for the Canucks, evening up the score just over a minute later while simultaneously taking a goalie interference penalty.

Wilmer Skoog notched his fourth of the playoffs midway through the first on the powerplay before Linus Karlsson scored his playoff leading 10th goal with the man advantage to tie the game 2-2 at the end of the first.

Charlotte dominated the second and third period but could not beat Arturs Silovs. Their forecheck proved difficult for Abbotsford and they forced constant turnovers in the Canucks' end.

Benning ultimately ripped a puck by Silovs on a powerplay after Chase Wouters took a tripping penalty four minutes into overtime.

The relentless forecheck producing results and scoring two powerplay goals is a good sign for the Checkers who had trouble converting earlier in the playoffs.

Charlotte outshot Abbotsford 42-13.

Silovs was once again dominant for Abbotsford, making 39 saves.

Blais and Karlsson were among the only Canucks to look dangerous and will need to continue to drive the bus offensively.

There was lots of chippy play throughout the game with 13 different players taking minor penalties, it will be interesting to see how the physicality develops in Game 3.

Game 3 goes Tuesday June 17 at 4pm EST/7pm PT in Abbotsford.

The full Calder Cup Playoffs bracket and schedule can be seen here.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Defenseman Mac Hollowell Signs In Russia

 Kim Klement-Imagn Images

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defenseman Mac Hollowell has signed a one-year deal in Russia with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, it was announced earlier this week.

Hollowell, a 2018 fourth-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, spent this season with the Penguins, scoring one goal and adding 30 assists for 31 points in 56 regular season games. Over a total of 244 career AHL regular season games with the Penguins, Hartford Wolf Pack and the Toronto Marlies, Hollowell has collected 14 goals and 122 assists for 136 points.

Having turned pro at the end of the 2018-19 season, Hollowell appeared in six NHL games, all with the Maple Leafs. In those games, Hollowell collected two assists. Prior to making the jump to the AHL, Hollowell played parts of five seasons in the OHL with the Soo Greyhounds.

With Hollowell heading for the KHL, this will be his first foray overseas. A talented, puck-moving defender, Hollowell hasn't been able to make it back to the NHL but should be able to go over and have success in Russia as soon as he steps out onto the ice.

Abbotsford Canucks Defeat Texas Stars, Advance To Calder Cup Finals

The Abbotsford Canucks have eliminated the Texas Stars and advanced to the Calder Cup Finals where they will take on the Charlotte Checkers.

The Canucks captured the Robert W. Clarke as Western Conference Champions with a 4-2 win in game six.

Goaltender Arturs Silovs continued his fantastic playoff run with a .917 SP, 2.28 GAA, and one shutout in the series, he has a .929 SP, 1.94 GAA, and 12-5 record with five shutouts in the playoffs. He made 23 stops in game six.

There was a bizarre sequence early in the game when Sammy Blais thought he had opened the scoring, during the confusion several players stopped playing and Texas went down the ice and scored.

After scoring his first goal of the playoffs in game five Arshdeep Bains scored twice in game six, he and Linus Karlsson led the team with seven points each in the Conference Finals.

Jujhar Khaira scored his third of the playoffs before Max Sasson scored his first of the series midway through the third in what ended up being the game winner.

The Canucks' defense core had a stellar series, veteran Christian Wolanin formed a great pairing with Victor Mancini while Guillaume Brisebois continued to perform in all situations.

In a series that had three overtime games and a 1-0 game Abbotsford showed their comfort under pressure and ability to grind out different types of games.

Despite boasting the two top point scorers of the playoffs in Cameron Hughes (19) and Justin Hryckowian (18) the Stars could not solve the Abbotsford defense.

Harrison Scott scored his first career professional goal for the Stars in one of their few bright spots in game six.

Goaltender Magnus Hellberg earned the start after entering the game in relief in game four, he was under fire all game and made 36 saves on 39 shots.

The Stars had a great campaign and it will be fascinating to see the roster they return with next season as several players are pending free agents or have earned promotions.

The 87th Calder Cup gets underway on June 13 in North Carolina.

Milwaukee Admirals' Mark Friedman Signs Two-Year Deal In Sweden

Dave Kallmann / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Milwaukee Admirals defenseman Mark Friedman has signed a two-year deal in Sweden with Rogle BK, it was announced earlier this week.

Friedman, a 2014 third round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers, split time this season between the Admirals, the Abbotsford Canucks and the Vancouver Canucks. In five NHL games, Friedman went pointless but he collected three goals and 16 assists for 19 points in 41 combined AHL games.

With the Admirals having made the Calder Cup playoffs, Friedman got into 10 games with the team, putting up a goal and three points.

Since turning pro at the end of the 2016-17 season, Friedman has gotten into 93 career NHL regular season games with the Flyers, Canucks and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Over that span, he scored four goals and added nine assists for 13 points.

With Friedman off to the SHL, he should get the opportunity to solidify a consistent role for himself that will see him play in all situations. A talented defender, Friedman was never able to grab a full-time NHL role but has the tools needed to be a difference maker for Rogle BK.
