VIDEO: Eichel scores OT winner with 1 second left

After watching Connor McDavid score an overtime winner against him earlier in the month, Jack Eichel decided to bury one of his own Saturday.

Facing the Carolina Hurricanes, the 19-year-old scored his 21st goal of the season during the third period, and then added another in overtime after jumping on a loose puck and beating Cam Ward to lead his team to a 3-2 victory.

After the first overtime winner of his career, Eichel now has five goals in his last six games.

Red Wings’ Kronwall: Injury ‘not serious’ after awkward fall

After missing 15 games with a knee injury earlier this season, it appeared Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall may have suffered a similar ailment Saturday against the New York Rangers.

Kronwall was helped off the ice and left the game after being sandwiched between a pair of teammates - goaltender Petr Mrazek and forward Andreas Athanasiou - while falling to the ice.

He did not return to the game, but told Ansar Khan of MLive.com that he did not believe the injury was serious after the Red Wings' 3-2 overtime win.

The 35-year-old leads the team in ice time, averaging 22:41.

Teemu Selanne: Doping offenses warrant lifetime bans

With a number of athletes testing positive for banned substances in recent weeks, including, most notably, tennis star Maria Sharapova, many are beginning to ponder if sanctions on athletes caught using performance-enhancing drugs should become even more harsh.

Among those who want to see harsher penalties is retired NHL legend Teemu Selanne, who discussed doping in a blog post published Wednesday on his website, Selanne.com.

"I think the only way that would make athletes think long and hard about using banned substances is an automatic life-time ban for serious doping offences," Selanne wrote. "I'm sure that would at least make a person stop and think whether it’s a chance worth taking."

His words came in response to reports the NHL blocked the World Anti-Doping Agency in September from testing athletes during the lead up to the World Cup of Hockey. The 45-year-old Selanne is a member of Team Finland's executive staff for the tournament.

Selanne also mentioned the highly anticipated alumni game he will participate in between former members of the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers.

"And finally, I can’t even express how excited I am about the alumni game at the NHL Heritage Classic outdoor game in my beloved Winnipeg next October," he wrote, later adding the game will "surely be interesting" with Wayne Gretzky playing in just his second alumni game.

VIDEO: Tavares roofs backhand for 200th NHL goal

During the second period Saturday against the Boston Bruins, New York Islanders captain John Tavares hit a milestone by burying his 200th career goal past Tuukka Rask.

The 25-year-old forward jumped on a loose puck and quickly lifted it over Rask with a perfect backhand for his 26th goal of the season. He's scored at least 24 times in each of his seven NHL seasons.

Tavares should hit another milestone before the month ends, as he entered Saturday six games shy of 500.

Coyotes’ Smith to make 1st start since December vs. Oilers

Arizona Coyotes goalie Mike Smith will be back between the pipes against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday after missing the last 40 games, head coach Dave Tippett announced.

Smith has missed almost three months after surgery to repair a core muscle injury in December. His start comes just one day after Tippett said it was "very realistic" the netminder would play again this season, per Sarah McLellan of azcentral.

He's sporting a 10-9-1 record with a 3.06 goals-against average, and .901 save percentage on the year.

The Coyotes will be seeking their second consecutive win after rookie netminder Louis Domingue made 24 saves to backstop the team to a 4-1 win Friday over the Calgary Flames.

Flyers’ Neuvirth dealing with stomach virus, Stolarz recalled

The Philadelphia Flyers announced Saturday that goaltender Michal Neuvirth has a stomach virus, and as a result recalled fellow goalie Anthony Stolarz from the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Neuvirth won three consecutive starts before losing his most recent outing, March 3 against the Edmonton Oilers. He has a 16-8-4 record this season with three shutouts.

With the Czech Republic native sidelined, Steve Mason will start for the second day in a row after making 18 stops Friday in a 3-1 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Rangers’ Nash to return from leg injury vs. Red Wings

After missing 20 games, New York Rangers forward Rick Nash will return to the lineup Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings, head coach Alain Vigneault announced.
