VIDEO: Red Wings’ Smith rocks Canadiens’ Matteau with open-ice hit

Brendan Smith dropped the hammer on Stefan Matteau.

The Detroit Red Wings defenseman caught the young Montreal Canadiens forward with a devastating open ice hit Thursday that sparked a melee.

Smith wasn't penalized for the hit, but received a roughing minor for the ensuing skirmish with Phillip Danault.

Matteau was able to return after being examined in the locker room.
