NHL Monday betting preview: Flames will heat up in San Jose

Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section.

This past weekend could have gone a lot better. Three of the four teams we wagered on held two-goal leads and lost, while the team that didn't is the only one that won for us. Watching those bets play out was a good way to take some years off your life.

At least the Detroit Red Wings cashed as +270 'dogs on Sunday, if you followed our trend of the week.

In any case, let's bounce back during this massive week ahead.

GOATs and scapegoats

Given how some of our other weekend bets unfolded, we needed the Colorado Avalanche to come through in a big way on Saturday - and they did. Kudos to Nazem Kadri and Nathan MacKinnon for finding a way to solve Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins, who was looking like he might never allow a goal again.

We followed that up with the Red Wings trend play on Sunday afternoon, and it was looking like we might never lose again after the Chicago Blackhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Winnipeg Jets at MTS Place. Well, after leading for 48:49 of game time, Chicago collapsed in spectacular fashion. The Jets scored four goals in the last 11 minutes to win the contest and break our spirit.

Monday bets

Florida Panthers (+120)

The Panthers are in the midst of a small rough patch, but Aleksander Barkov is back and this team has still won five of its last seven on the road. The Philadelphia Flyers are a remarkable 18-5-4 at home, but three of those five regulation losses came in their last seven games. These are two evenly matched teams, so I'll gladly take Sergei Bobrovsky at +120 over Carter Hart at -135. Hart might need a game or two to shake off the rust after not starting since Jan. 13th due to an abdomen injury.

Tampa Bay Lightning (-150)

No team had its pride ripped away during last season's playoffs quite like the Lightning did at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets. This is the first meeting between these teams since Columbus swept Tampa, and we can expect a significant response here in a massive revenge game for the Lightning, who'd won six of their last seven visits to Columbus before that postseason nightmare. Given that defenseman Seth Jones is now sidelined for the home team, I'm comfortable laying the juice.

I'd also play the Blue Jackets' team total under 2.5 in this spot. Tampa's allowed one goal or fewer in five of its last six regular-season visits to Columbus, including three shutouts.

Nashville Predators/Vancouver Canucks under 6 (-105)

This is typically a spot where I'd be all over the Canucks (+105), who had a nine-game home winning streak snapped on Saturday. However, I really like what I've seen from the Predators of late, as they've won six of their last eight on the road. This is an incredibly tight contest to call, so let's focus on the total. Nashville is playing some really strong defensive hockey, while Vancouver's allowed two or fewer goals in seven of its last nine games at Rogers Arena. Take the under in a matchup that has 3-2 in overtime written all over it.

Best bet

Calgary Flames (-115)

Give me a break with this line. Sure, the Flames have lost five of their last seven games, but they're a very different team on the road, where they've won 10 of their last 13. Calgary also put in a terrific showing to win in Vancouver on Saturday, and I expect the team to build on that momentum against a San Jose Sharks side that's not nearly as talented. The Sharks won in Calgary last week and I expect the Flames to return the favor in a game they really have to have.

Trend of the night

The Arizona Coyotes have lost six consecutive road contests for the first time since December 2017

The Coyotes have been outscored 25-8 over those six games while failing to register a single point in the standings. Three of the losses came against Eastern Conference teams - just like Monday's opponent, the Montreal Canadiens. Additionally, Arizona was shut out in two of those three.

Penguins’ Marino set for surgery after shot to face, out indefinitely

The Pittsburgh Penguins' injury woes continue.

Rookie defenseman John Marino will undergo surgery Monday after taking a slap shot to his face on Thursday, and there is no timetable for his return to action, head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters, per NHL.com's Wes Crosby.

Marino was able to skate off the ice with the help of a trainer following the shot from Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos, but he did not return to the game.

While it was initially believed that Marino had avoided a serious injury, he was later diagnosed with three broken bones in his cheek that would require surgery, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's Matt Vensel reported Friday.

The 22-year-old Marino has been a revelation for the Penguins on the blue line this season. He's racked up five goals and 25 points in 51 games while averaging 20:19 minutes of ice time.

Blue Jackets’ Jones out indefinitely with ankle injury

Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones is out indefinitely with an ankle injury suffered Saturday night against the Colorado Avalanche, the club announced Monday.

Jones leads the Blue Jackets in ice time this season, averaging over 25 minutes per night. He's also posted 30 points in 56 games and was named to the Metro Division's All-Star team in January.

The Blue Jackets own a remarkable 19-3-5 record in their last 27 games. They've allowed just 1.43 goals against per 60 minutes at five-on-five in that span, the lowest mark in the league, according to Natural Stat Trick. Rookie goaltender Elvis Merzlikins has made plenty of headlines, but the team's defense, led by Jones, has been spectacular.

With Jones sidelined, 2015 first-round pick Gabriel Carlsson has been recalled from the AHL. The towering 6-foot-5 blue-liner posted 11 points in 39 games with the Cleveland Monsters.

The Blue Jackets also recalled 20-year-old forward Liam Foudy from the OHL's London Knights on Sunday.

Ranking the top NHL trade deadline candidates

The 2019-20 trade deadline may ultimately lack the sizzle of its 2018-19 counterpart, but that doesn't mean this one will arrive without intrigue.

It doesn't appear as though big-ticket pending unrestricted free agents like Alex Pietrangelo, Braden Holtby, and Jacob Markstrom will be moved, but they could eventually be shipped out should they fail to sign extensions with their respective clubs. More impact players could also become available depending on which teams fall out of postseason contention before Feb. 24.

While those stars are far less likely to be sent packing, here are the biggest names that could be dealt prior to the deadline:

1. Chris Kreider, Rangers

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
LW 28 Pending UFA $4.625M

Barring the sudden availability of a superior player, Kreider is the best name on the trade block and appears most likely to be traded.

Eight teams have reportedly informed the Rangers that Kreider's at the top of their respective wish list. The skilled winger's combination of speed and size, along with his age and relatively digestible cap hit, justify his status as the most coveted target.

2. Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Senators

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
C 27 Pending UFA $3.1M

Pageau is having a career year for the lowly Senators, and it wouldn't be at all surprising to see the forward dealt given the club's history of unloading players. His inflated shooting percentage is bound to regress whether or not he stays in Ottawa, but he could still provide a contender with some scoring punch and strong two-way play from the center position.

3. Tyler Toffoli, Kings

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
RW 27 Pending UFA $4.6M

The struggling Kings would be foolish not to sell ahead of the deadline. Toffoli would arguably be their best trade chip, considering his age and offensive abilities. While he'll likely be a rental, the talented forward will undoubtedly be coveted by clubs looking to add a top-six winger.

4. Alec Martinez, Kings

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
D 32 Signed through 2020-21 $4M

Yes, Martinez has some miles on him, but the two-time Cup winner remains a responsible left-shot blue-liner who's posted respectable possession numbers this season for a lackluster Kings squad. His contract runs through next year, so while he comes with term, it's short enough to welcome potential suitors and could actually make him a more enticing target.

5. Sami Vatanen, Devils

Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / Getty
Position Age Contract Cap Hit
D 28 Pending UFA $4.9M

Much like the Kings, the Devils are still languishing near the bottom of the standings after trading Taylor Hall and firing their head coach. So it would make sense for the teardown to continue with the trade of Vatanen, a versatile, productive blue-liner on an expiring contract. The Devils placed him on injured reserve Thursday, but the move's retroactive to Feb. 1, so he can be activated at any time.

6. Ilya Kovalchuk, Canadiens

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
RW 36 Pending UFA $700K

Kovalchuk has been red-hot since the Canadiens inked him to a low-risk, one-year deal for the league minimum in early January. One would expect general manager Marc Bergevin to capitalize on that if Montreal isn't in playoff contention on deadline day. However, considering how well the Russian forward has fit in, it wouldn't be shocking to see the Canadiens hold onto him if they're in the playoff hunt.

7. Andreas Athanasiou, Red Wings

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
LW 25 Pending RFA $3M

The Red Wings have several pending restricted free agents, and while neither Anthony Mantha nor Tyler Bertuzzi are going anywhere, Athanasiou could be moved. Although he's been inconsistent this season, the speedy winger poured in 30 goals in 2018-19 and might have a shot at finding his old form on a better team.

8. Brenden Dillon, Sharks

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
D 29 Pending UFA $3.27M

Like Martinez, Dillon has never posted staggering offensive numbers, but his underlying figures are impressive given the Sharks' season. He also piles up hits and is on pace for about 250 of them in 2019-20 after registering a career-high 201 last season.

9. Matt Dumba, Wild

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
D 25 Signed through 2022-23 $6M

Dumba isn't a pending free agent and won't be for a while, but that could actually make the right-shot rearguard more attractive to teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs, who might be looking for a defenseman with term. He's picked up his play lately after a disappointing first half, and the struggling Wild could look to take advantage of that if they're out of the race by the deadline.

10. Shayne Gostisbehere, Flyers

Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / Getty
Position Age Contract Cap Hit
D 26 Signed through 2022-23 $4.5M

The Flyers remain in the playoff mix, but Gostisbehere might still be moved for several reasons. He's struggled under head coach Alain Vigneault, and trading him would give the club some added cap flexibility with franchise goalie Carter Hart needing an extension next season. Gostisbehere missed about a month with an injury recently, but he's since returned and could benefit from a change of scenery.

11. Mikael Granlund, Predators

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
RW 27 Pending UFA $5.75M

After a slow start to the season, Granlund has started to produce and could be bolstering his trade value as a result. The question will be whether the Predators are still in the playoff hunt by deadline time. If not, Granlund would be a prime candidate to move with his expiring deal.

12. Alexandar Georgiev, Rangers

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
G 23 Pending RFA $792K

Unless Holtby or Markstrom suddenly hit the trade block, Georgiev is the best available goalie. Several teams, including the Leafs, have reportedly checked in with the Rangers to discuss the cost of acquiring him. Igor Shesterkin's arrival has made Georgiev expendable in New York, and the latter could make for a solid addition to a contender in need of a backup.

13. Kasperi Kapanen, Maple Leafs

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
RW 23 Signed through 2021-22 $3.2M

Kapanen is frequently cited as a potential trade chip. He's still young, locked in for a couple more seasons at an affordable rate, and expendable given Toronto's forward depth and all the money committed to its big four. Head coach Sheldon Keefe recently downplayed disciplining Kapanen for a "pattern" of tardiness, but if that trend were to continue, it could be yet another justification for trading the winger.

14. Andreas Johnsson, Maple Leafs

Kevin Sousa / National Hockey League / Getty
Position Age Contract Cap Hit
LW 25 Signed through 2022-23 $3.4M

Johnsson is the other relatively young Maple Leafs forward who could be dangled in a trade, as they're clearly looking to upgrade on the back end. He's a bit older than Kapanen and gets paid a touch more, but Johnsson is coming off a 20-goal rookie season and still has enough promise to warrant interest in his own right.

15. Dylan DeMelo, Senators

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
D 26 Pending UFA $900K

Including Pageau and DeMelo, Ottawa has no less than 10 pending UFAs. While there might be a market for some of the others - like Vladislav Namestnikov, Ron Hainsey, or even Craig Anderson - none of those veterans are as young or as affordable as DeMelo, an effective defenseman who's somehow driving possession on a porous Senators club.

16. Ondrej Kase, Ducks

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
RW 24 Signed through 2020-21 $2.6M

While Kase's injury woes and lack of consistency have clouded his time with the Ducks, he's still relatively young and carries a team-friendly cap hit along with another year of term. Anaheim could try to get something for him while retaining the rest of its core forward group.

17. Josh Manson, Ducks

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
D 28 Signed through 2021-22 $4.1M

Anaheim loves Manson, a gritty stay-at-home blue-liner who's spent his whole six-year career with the Ducks. However, this rebuliding team is one of the league's most obvious candidates to sell, and he's yet another example of a reliable rearguard with term.

18. Corey Crawford, Blackhawks

Position Age Contract Cap Hit
G 35 Pending UFA $6M

Robin Lehner could've been on this list as well, as both Blackhawks goaltenders are playing out expiring contracts. However, Crawford's about six-and-a-half years older than his counterpart, and he's been outplayed by Lehner. Lehner appears more likely to be in Chicago's future plans, making Crawford an interesting trade candidate.

Blue Jackets recall Liam Foudy from OHL’s London Knights

The Blue Jackets have recalled forward Liam Foudy from the OHL's London Knights on an emergency basis, and he's set to make his NHL debut on Monday against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Knights announced Sunday.

NHL teams are permitted to recall players from junior during the season under certain extenuating circumstances. Recalling Foudy is allowed after a mutual decision the Blue Jackets and Knights made, according to The Athletic's Aaron Portzline.

Under the rules, Foudy can't stay in the NHL for more than five games or be in the league past March 1, Portzline adds.

The Blue Jackets selected the 20-year-old 18th overall in 2018. He's the Knights' co-captain this season and has recorded 20 goals and 43 points in 32 games.

Report: Oilers, Nurse finalizing 2-year contract extension

The Edmonton Oilers are finalizing a two-year contract extension with defenseman Darnell Nurse worth slightly more than $5.5 million annually, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

The Oilers drafted the 25-year-old seventh overall in 2013. He's been a key defender for the team, averaging 21:35 minutes of ice time per game over his career. Nurse has appeared in 334 contests with Edmonton, racking up 28 goals and 112 points.

He's averaging 22:46 minutes this season and has recorded four goals and 24 points in 55 games.

Nurse, who's a pending restricted free agent, is now set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the extension, McKenzie adds.
