Red Wings’ Mantha scores 1st NHL goal, much to family’s delight

Anthony Mantha has arrived.

The young Detroit Red Wings forward recorded his first career NHL goal with a rebound chip against the Montreal Canadiens.

As the video shows, Mantha had several family members and friends in attendance, including Canadiens' great and proud grandfather, Andre Pronovost.

The goal came on the power play, with Brad Richards and Mike Green drawing assists.

VIDEO: Red Wings’ Smith rocks Canadiens’ Matteau with open-ice hit

Brendan Smith dropped the hammer on Stefan Matteau.

The Detroit Red Wings defenseman caught the young Montreal Canadiens forward with a devastating open ice hit Thursday that sparked a melee.

Smith wasn't penalized for the hit, but received a roughing minor for the ensuing skirmish with Phillip Danault.

Matteau was able to return after being examined in the locker room.

Wild’s Parise ends scoring slump with hat trick on ex-teammate Backstrom

Zach Parise seems pretty happy to see Niklas Backstrom back in Minnesota.

Backstrom, who appeared in 409 games with the Wild up to last season and remains the franchise wins leader (194), made the start for the visiting Calgary Flames on Thursday, and Parise took full advantage of the fact it was only the goalie's second start in over a year.

The first goal wasn't how Backstrom wanted to reacquaint himself with the state of hockey, and the second wasn't much prettier.

Parise added his third goal of the game before the end of the first period to complete the hat trick.

The goals, which came moments before a video tribute for the returning Backstrom, were Parise's 20th, 21st and 22nd of the season, as well as his 100th, 101st and 102nd for the Wild.

Canucks actually score, end longest drought in club history

It will likely go down in history as a "Where were you when ..." moment.

The Vancouver Canucks scored. It happened. Bo Horvat found the back of the net Thursday against the Nashville Predators, putting home a rebound, giving his team its first goal in four games - 234 minutes and 52 seconds, actually.

It was the longest drought in club history, and the fourth longest in the NHL in the last 30 years, according to Sportsnet. You almost have to be impressed.

The tweets were actually somewhat fun to read:

Ducks’ McGinn scores again, enjoying his wings

California suits Jamie McGinn.

The winger became a 20-goal scorer for the first time in his career Thursday, scoring his sixth goal in 12 games - and fourth in last five - since being acquired by the Anaheim Ducks from the Buffalo Sabres at the trade deadline.

A number of high-profile players were traded on and before this year's deadline, but McGinn's been quietly sniping better than most. He has more goals since being traded than Mikkel Boedker (three), Jiri Hudler (four), Andrew Ladd (three), and Eric Staal (one).

Only Devante Smith-Pelly has more goals than McGinn's six. Smith-Pelly has seven goals in 10 games for the New Jersey Devils - one more than the six he scored with the Montreal Canadiens in 46 games. That's the trade deadline for you.

McGinn's playing out the final season of a deal paying him $3 million. His career year's come at a good time, and he's undoubtedly looking forward to July 1.

Bruins honor coach Julien for setting team’s all-time wins record

The Boston Bruins took a moment prior to puck drop Thursday to honor the winningest coach in franchise history.

Claude Julien led the team to his 388th regular-season victory March 7 against Florida, passing Art Ross for the franchise lead in coaching wins. With those same Panthers in town, the club paid tribute to the coach, who received a watch from the organization and a trip to Disney World from the players.

A video featuring Boston sports icons was also played:

The game marks Julien's 697th behind the Bruins bench, with a record of 390-219-87 - not to mention the 2011 Stanley Cup - during his tenure.

Panthers’ Mitchell facing uncertain future after latest concussion

The Florida Panthers may have to skate into the playoffs without their captain.

Defenseman Willie Mitchell, who's been out of the lineup since January with a concussion, is attempting to return before the end of the regular season, but team doctors are reportedly concerned about his future health, according to George Richards of the Miami Herald.

"Willie has to decide whether he can play or not," general manager Dale Tallon said Thursday.

"We want to make sure he doesn’t get hurt, we want to make sure there is no permanent damage. But this is up to Willie. We want to do what is best for him. That’s the bottom line. The doctors have said they’re concerned with his long-term health."

Mitchell has been skating and is physically able to play, Richards adds. The Panthers don't want to prohibit Mitchell from returning, but at the same time, they also don't want to see him suffer another head injury.

The 38-year-old is in the final year of his contract, meaning a playoff run with the Panthers may be his last hurrah.

He's expected to make a decision in the coming days.

Auston Matthews named to U.S. World Championship roster

Auston Matthews continues to blaze his own trail.

Matthews was named Thursday to the 2016 United States Men's National Team that will compete at the World Championship in Moscow and St. Petersburg in May.

Matthews is the first player named to the team, with the rest of the squad and its coaches to be announced in the coming weeks, according to USA Hockey.

The 18-year-old, who's expected to be the first overall pick at the 2016 NHL Draft, spent this past season playing with the Swiss League's ZSC Lions, recording 24 goals and 22 assists in 36 games. He also played for the U.S. at the World Junior Championship in January.

Matthews appeared in an exhibition game with the U.S. Men's National Team prior to the 2015 IIHF Worlds, becoming the first player to suit up at that level before entering their draft-eligible season.

Many NHL eyes will no doubt be tuned in to see how he holds up against world-class competition.
