Blue Jackets’ Bobrovsky, Foligno off to worlds

Sergei Bobrovsky and Nick Foligno's seasons aren't over yet.

The Columbus Blue Jackets teammates will represent their countries at the IIHF World Championship, writes the The Columbus Dispatch's Aaron Portzline.

Foligno, Columbus' captain, will suit up for the United States, while Bobrovsky will man the crease for Russia.

"It's just nice to continue your season," Foligno said. "But I sure don't want to get used to have our (NHL) seasons end in April."

Bobrovsky, also on Russia's World Cup squad, was limited to only 36 starts this season, so he wants to play.

"I have had lots of time off in the season. Unfortunate, yes," he said. "So I will go. It's always great to represent your country. And to play in front of your own fans, of course, is special."

The tournament runs May 6-22 in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Forward Brandon Saad declined his invitation from the United States. The former Chicago Blackhawks forward has often been busy this time of year, and will be participating in the upcoming World Cup on the Under-23 North American team.

Report: U.S. expected to name Devils’ Hynes head coach at worlds

The Americans are turning to the Devil - New Jersey Devils head coach John Hynes, that is.

Hynes is expected to be named head coach of the American squad at the upcoming World Championship, according to USA Today's Kevin Allen.

The tournament takes place May 6-22 in Russia.

Hynes is a known commodity to USA Hockey, writes Allen, as he was head coach of the national team's development program from 2003-09.

The Devils are 37-36-8 in Hynes' first season behind the bench, and will not take part in the playoffs.

Report: McDavid will play in World Championship

Connor McDavid is reportedly going to play competitive hockey in the spring, after all.

The Edmonton Oilers forward plans to suit up for Canada in the World Championship next month, TSN's Darren Dreger reported on Tuesday's edition of "Insider Trading."

McDavid will battle Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel and projected first overall pick Auston Matthews, who'll play for the United States, according to the report.

Dreger said Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly is expected to join McDavid on Team Canada.

Carolina Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters will guide the Canadian squad at the tournament, which takes place May 6-22 in Russia.

Canada expected to tab Hurricanes’ Peters as World Championship coach

Bill Peters will be coaching a different shade of red all summer.

After a second consecutive season of squeezing strong underlying numbers from a retooling roster, the Carolina Hurricanes coach has earned the chance to guide Canada at next month's World Championship in Russia, TSN's Darren Dreger reports.

It will be an international tuneup of sorts for Peters, who will also work on Mike Babcock's staff for the World Cup in September.

With a 52.1 Corsi For percentage, Peters has engineered the NHL's eighth-best possession team since being appointed to the Hurricanes bench.

Price still hopes to play before season ends, eyeing World Cup

It's hard to believe the last time Carey Price was on the ice in a game was on Nov. 25, 2015. He played 40 minutes for the Montreal Canadiens that night, leaving the game with a lower-body injury.

Four months later, with Montreal playing out the string, Price is with his teammates on their penultimate road trip and still holding out hope he'll play behind them before the season ends.

Considering Price is openly saying he doesn't have full range of motion, it's difficult to imagine him taking the crease between now and April 9. The Canadiens are in Florida on Saturday, host the Panthers on Tuesday, visit Carolina on Thursday, before ending their season at home next Saturday against Tampa Bay.

"Having your teammates here is the best thing," Price said Friday. "It makes recovery easier."

As for the World Cup, Price was named to Canada's initial 16-man roster, so the pressure's off, in that respect. As the gold-medal winning goalie in Sochi 2014, Price has nothing to prove. He simply wants to play.

Price will likely end the season with a 10-2 record and .924 save percentage, his age 28 season all but taken away from him.

Auston Matthews named to U.S. World Championship roster

Auston Matthews continues to blaze his own trail.

Matthews was named Thursday to the 2016 United States Men's National Team that will compete at the World Championship in Moscow and St. Petersburg in May.

Matthews is the first player named to the team, with the rest of the squad and its coaches to be announced in the coming weeks, according to USA Hockey.

The 18-year-old, who's expected to be the first overall pick at the 2016 NHL Draft, spent this past season playing with the Swiss League's ZSC Lions, recording 24 goals and 22 assists in 36 games. He also played for the U.S. at the World Junior Championship in January.

Matthews appeared in an exhibition game with the U.S. Men's National Team prior to the 2015 IIHF Worlds, becoming the first player to suit up at that level before entering their draft-eligible season.

Many NHL eyes will no doubt be tuned in to see how he holds up against world-class competition.

Nylander on Sweden’s radar for World Championships

William Nylander may get to represent his country again this season.

After suffering a concussion in the first period of his first game at the World Junior Hockey Championship in December, the Toronto Maple Leafs' prized prospect could represent Sweden at the World Championships, writes Sportsnet's Chris Johnston.

Sweden head coach Par Marts is actually in Toronto to watch Nylander play Monday, and didn't hide the fact.

"The main reason is William, that's for sure," Marts said.

"It's important to see them live. You can't just watch TV or listen to what other people say. I think that's important for me; I must see them in action, that's the key."

Nylander picked up two assists Monday, giving him three goals and three assists in 12 games. Marts knows the kind of skill the youngster brings.

"He's a guy that makes a difference in the game. He's a good scorer, he can make penalty shots and stuff like that and he's really good on (the) power play. Very good offense, so that's what I like about him."

The worlds run May 6-22 in Russia, and Nylander being 19 won't factor into the decision, Marts said.

If Sweden does want Nylander, a discussion will have to be had with general manager Lou Lamoriello. The Maple Leafs have plans for Nylander once the NHL season ends - he's expected to go back down to the AHL's Toronto Marlies and compete for a Calder Cup.

The Marlies are the AHL's best team and have already clinched a playoff spot.

Canada names Treliving, McPhee co-GMs for World Championship

With many NHL executives currently involved with clubs for the highly anticipated World Cup of Hockey in September, Hockey Canada has turned to a pair of veteran executives to select their squad for the upcoming IIHF World Championships in May.

Brad Treliving and George McPhee have been named co-general managers of the Canadian team, according to multiple reports, that will head to Russia and look to defend last year's gold medal win.

Treliving was named general manager of the Calgary Flames in April 2014 after spending over 10 years as an assistant general manager with the then-Phoenix Coyotes.

McPhee currently serves as a special advisor to the general manager with the New York Islanders, following a 17-year stint as the GM of the Washington Capitals that ended in 2014.

Last year's first-place performance in Prague ended a five-year absence from the podium for Canada, and a long gold medal drought dating back to 2007, the last time the tournament took place in Russia.
